Verhulst to U19 tryouts

Payton Verhulst, Class of 2021 Louisville women's basketball signee, is headed to the USA U-19 tryouts.

The tryouts will be held in Denver from May 14-16. The 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup is scheduled to be held August 7-19 in Hungary and will have 16 teams, including the USA.

Some of the others invited included Lauren Betts (Stanford), Caitlin Clark (Iowa), Amari DeBerry (UConn), Azzi Fudd *UConn), Hannah Gusters (LSU), Diamond Johnson (NC State), Olivia Miles (Notre Dame), Angel Reese (Maryland) and Jewel Spear (Wake Forest). 27 players in all will compete for the roster.

This isn't a Jeff Walz coached squad (we know his love for USA hoops) but Cori Close (UCLA), who has served on USA teams with Walz will be the head skipper. She's got quality assistants in Aaron Johnston (South Dakota State) and Joni Taylor (Georgia).

The USA Junior National Team Selection Committee has a few coaches names you'll recognize in Jen Rizzotti (chairman and president of the Connecticut Sun), Wes Moore (NC State) Kara Lawson (Duke) and Tonya Cardoza (Temple).

I don’t see how she was selected as Head coach when she doesn’t have the coaching experience to back it up. She might turn out to be a great coach but she isn’t one yet. This is a perfect example of politics.

It is a bold move by Duke, but, up and coming players will see she had WNBA success and hope that she can get them to the next level. Lawson has her work cut out for her, though.
