Thoughts on who could be the Contingency Plan?

Well, Mitchell is in the Lottery on Gary Parrish's CBS mock and #19 on draftexpress, so I consider him gone.

So, I was looking at 247 who we've offered at the SG position. Well there is only 1 that hasnt committed anywhere. His name is Emmanuel Lambright and he isnt even ranked nationally or anything. No stars, nothing.

Tbh, I'll be quite upset if this is the contingency plan, but this isnt any flame towards the player but I expected someone who was known across the boards. Kind of a weak route out unless this guy is severely underrated but to not even have a star is a little bit concerning.

But who knows, we may have not even offered the guy who we plan to get in replacement of Mitchell just to keep it a big secret.

Thoughts on who it could be?

Jordan Nwora or V J King ........... both have the ability to play the shooting guard spot in Louisville's offense.
I spoke to Mitchell at the Night of the Future Stars at IUS tonight, don't be surprised if he returns to U of L for his junior season❗️

Dude if he is really gonna be picked around 19-21st he gone million is hard to pass over

That amount is a pittance compared to coming back and becoming a true lottery pick (1 thru 14). We need to remember that Donovan's family does not need the money as his father is an executive with the NY Mets baseball team. Plus staying an extra year would get him his degree which is something his parents truly want for him. I believe he will be coming back. Just my own opinion.

His father's income is not what is going to take care of Donovan as this is a young man who is looking to make his money doing what i guess he wants to do play basketball. Last i checked making hundreds of thousands of dollars fa out ways being a collegiate kid nowadays. makes me no difference what he does . However my money is on him staying in the draft. he is moving up the boards. Cause he has been working out for teams and impressing.

Also, risk of injury must be considered when turning down first round money.

Again, it was a small sampling, but Nwora did not appear to be quick enough to play guard.

The lure of $$$ must mean something to him, he put his name in the draft.
Also, he's never going to be a top 5 pick, if he's a first rounder then he needs to be smart and go.
I hate the system, but you just can't turn down life changing money. You can come back to school later if you want, but you have to go if you are in Mitchell's position.

The NBA pay scale is going up next year so Mitchell can stay another year and improve his game and improve his chances of staying in the NBA long term and still make just as much or more money than he would make if he came out this year.

2017 pay scale:
18th - $1.42, $1.48, $1.548 = total salary $4,452,000

2018
18th- $1.69, $2.06, $2.345 = total salary $6,041,000 = a difference of $1,589,000 or basically a decent years worth of rookie salary. So he could say in school and get picked in the exact same spot and still make more money next year than he would if came out this year. He would have to be the 12th pick in the current draft to make the same amount of money he can make next year being picked 18th.

For reference: the #1 pick in 2018 will make $5,504,400 more in his first 3 years than the #1 pick in the 2017 draft. The rookie pay scale is getting a big raise next year.

You make a very good case, but it just isn't that simple. He stands a much greater chance of slipping in the draft and losing money.
Look at Allen from Duke, he should have left after his Sophomore year, now he's lost millions.
The other point to make is the rookie contract, it's good to get that big money right off the bat, but it's the 2nd contract that really matters and he will have much more time to practice with top coaches in the NBA compared to limited practice time in college.
It sucks losing players, but he would be really smart to leave now.

Where do you get your info? He hasn't worked out for any teams yet. Not one - still in school and on campus.

As much as I hate to see Donovan go, my guess is that he will stay in the draft. It's a shame as I think he could develop into a much better player. He could definitely improve his ball handling and become more consistent in general. Unfortunately, these days, it behooves a player to take the $ when it is there (when it's a pretty assured thing) and develop in the NBA or even the D league.

Really hate to see him go. He's a great representative of UL, well-spoken, seems to be a gentleman and obviously a great college ballplayer.

It really all depends on where he falls in the draft, of course. When I look at the names, I am surprised he's as high as he is, given that he's only 6'3. But scouts and the people who follow such things know much more than I do.

I have a bad feeling that he will stay in the draft as well. Its really unfortunate timing for Louisville the last two years because had Onuaku been smarter about his decision he could have came back and single handily probably cut ULs losses this past year by 3-4 and made UL so much more of a threat for a title and now if Donovan were to come back UL returns the front runner for ACC POY, All ACC Defensive 1st team and a Wooden Award watch list member and assembles probably the #1 team in the country....but without him UL falls to that middle of the pack with everyone else.

As a fan of the college game, in particular UK, I hate seeing these players go early. Mitchell had a great year, but you know you only saw the tip of the proverbial iceberg with him.
We go through this every year at UK. Getting DM back would skyrocket UL, getting Fox, Monk, Briscoe or Bam back, or some combination of those 4, would have been huge for UK, but every year we lose a host of players that were just starting to show how good they were.
Sucks for the college game.

Thanks for letting us all know you are a particular fan of uk. Us Cardinal fans would never have figured that out

Mock drafts are just that. You can spin them any way you want. Chad Ford currently has Donovan listed at 34.

His decision will hinge on how he does at the combine and the feedback he receives.
Doubt he's dropped 16 spots most boards have him 18-21

I'm not sure you understand how this process works at all. Every mock draft out there is just an opinion. Outside of the top 15, most aren't even close to being right. He hasn't raised his status at all, if anything he has dropped some due to people ranked higher than him signing with agents. As I said multiple times, everything hinges on his workouts for teams and performance in the combine. He is a 1 at the next level, unless he can show significant ball handling and court vision, he won't move up and will be better served coming back and proving himself one more year.

If Donovan Mitchell where to leave, and this point it is a HUGE if because he seems to be sliding down most mocks, I believe Coach P & staff will pursue a handful of grad transfers. Here are a few names to watch for:

* Marcus Keene (G) - Central Michigan **Has not stated whether he will return & transfer or stay in the draft**
- Led the nation in scoring last season at Central Michigan and would instantly become the most wanted player on the transfer market.
* Mark Alstork (G) - Wright State
- Averaged 19 points per game last season, and is a great three point shooter. Another guy who declared for the NBA draft but announced he will transfer if he doesn't stay in draft. Big time schools will pursue him.
* Elijah Brown (G) - New Mexico
- Another big time scorer who is leaving after a coaching change. Big time programs are pursuing him such as Oregon, Duke, Arizona, etc.

All three of these guys have proven they can fill the stat sheet at smaller schools, but I believe they would be great additions to the team here at Louisville. HOWEVER, I do expect Mitchell to return for next season.

I think you mean he's a 2 guard unless he improves his ball handling and court vision. There are a lot of 2 guards in this draft.

Which mocks has he dropped? I've only seen him become higher and higher

NBADraft.net has dropped from #12 at one time to #21 to now #26, DraftExpress has him at #19 after having him as high as #12, Chad Ford doesn't even have him listed in his first round and that's just three of hundreds of drafts. I think Mitchell is projecting in the mid to late first round.

No, he has been told he is looked at as a 1. That will be his position at the next level. I love Q but in all honesty, that should be his position here as well.

Well that should answer the question right there, he doesn't have the handle or court awareness to be a PG yet.

Draft express, NBA draft.net and CBS mock draft all list him as a SG.

No comprehension problem here. Just get tired of uk fans pointing out "I'm a uk fan" like we care. I don't really care that you are a uk fan. I don't really care that you want to post on a U of L forum either.
Great, so stay out of the conversation if you can't be civil.
I was having a conversation with another poster and you jumped in like you are the board police.
I don't see anything wrong with what I said at all.
You do have a reading comprehension problem though, I only stated that I'm a UK fan because it's very relevant to the topic at hand. If me saying that I'm a UK fan chaps you that much, than you have bigger issues.

Don't come to a Louisville board and expect validation or tell me what to do. You stated you are a uk fan because that's what uk fans do. Most here can figure out you are a uk fan based upon your screen name.

I think he'll be back too. Minority obviously. I also think it is a HUGE if that he leaves and, with what little inside info I have, have heard he will MOST LIKELY be back for another year. JMO and FWIW, that's what he's told a recruit that I have coached. I wish him the best in whatever he does.

Dwayne Sutton ❗️He's the answer to your question.

Dwayne Sutton has the ability to be an impact player for Louisville in 2017-18.

The Cardinals’ best player, Donovan Mitchell, has decided to test the NBA Draft waters. Mitchell, a first-team All-ACC guard in 2017, projects as a first-round pick but could return to school. Sophomore small forward Deng Adel, an emerging offensive talent, followed suit, too. Graduate transfer Tony Hicks will depart after using up his eligibility.

If Mitchell and Adel return, the majority of Louisville’s guard and wing rotation is set. However, if one or both of those guys stay in the draft, then there will be a lot of minutes and possessions up for grabs.

Sutton, despite being a walk-on, has an opportunity to crack into the rotation.

A possible factor in Mitchell's decision that I haven't seen discussed is Coach Pitino's possible suspension. I believe the deadline for early entrant withdrawal is June 12. I doubt we have an NCAA penalty ruling and UofL acceptance of that ruling by that date. I would think not knowing if Coach Pitino will be here to coach him for the entire season (as well as another possible post season ban) could be a factor in his decision. Just a lot of uncertainty regarding next season that won't become clear before he has to decide.

That is NBA retraction. The real deal is the May 24th. That's the NCAA retraction date. You have to decide to come back to school by that date.
