Taxes and hypocrisy

Ha Harry Reid in an attempt to goad Mitt Romney
into proving that he fulfilled his obligations as a citizen by releasing his income tax forms for a reasonable period of time, made the unsubstantiated
claim that he, Romney paid no taxes for ten years. Failing to pay one's income taxes is a felony
and would disqualify Romney for the Presidency.
Republicans have for months been making
the unsubstantiated claim that Obama was not born in the United States and
demanded that Obama release his birth certificate as proof of his eligibility
to be President. Obama has complied,
Romney has not .
·
Romney responded to Reid's claim with the following, that he paid taxes every year and that he paid
a lot of taxes. This probably true given the fact that in most states you can't buy a candy bar without paying sales taxes and if you buy something expensive like an elevator for your cars, then you paid a lot of taxes. The real question which Romney dodged is weather he paid income taxes to the United States government and income taxes to the state of Massachusetts?

Now Republicans are calling Reid a liar because his claim was unsubstantiated. But being unsubstantiated
doesn't make it a lie, it is a lie only if Reid knew it to be untrue and only Romney can provide evidence of that. The fact that Romney refused to prove Reid a liar and thus score a huge political point is
suspicious to say the least. It should also be noted that those Republicans calling Reid a liar are also making an unsubstantiated claim since Romney has not released the only evidence that could prove that
claim.
