Strategy against UVA

I think we have a few options to give the cavaliers a different look.
A: Play a line-up that can shoot the rock and bomb squad a lot of 3’s.
Q, MacMahon, Deng, Sutton, Williams (although he was way off against wake).

B: Play our best dribble drivers that can then dish to some shooters.
Q, Perry, VJ, Ray, Williams or Mahmoud.

C: A combination of the two.

If we set any high ball screens at all I would expect the driver not to go around them because of their hedge. I would utilize the slip screen and fake screen if you will where the dribbler calls for the screen and then doesn’t actually use it.

I get a headache trying to even figure out how this Card team can beat them, short of just being totally on fire for 40 minutes. I think there may be some points to be had in a transition/early offense type plan, but 2 things have got to happen there. 1) We have to stop them on their offensive end and 2) We have to rebound the ball well with no second chance points for them as well as offensive rebound if we do go early in the shot clock, otherwise they'll be running out on us. Zoning them on defense got Duke back in the game, but I'm not sure we'll be able to sit back in it if we get behind early. As somebody said before, being down 4 to those guys is like being down 12. Another thing we don't wanna do is get out of our offensive sets if we get down 8-10 points early. That will lead no doubt to a blow out. Got to still stay patient on O if we get down. And rebound. Did I say rebound? We can't let their big kid Salt dominate the boards, or it'll be a tough challenge. Hopefully Perry is out of his funk now, as we saw last night how good we can be if we can get Q a blow more consistently. Gonna be one tough challenge to get the W down there. Hopefully they will be feeling the after Duke letdown.

It’s definitely a tall order. They pose a huge match up problem for rebounding and our offense in general. I forgot they had Salt who is a hoss.

Patients on defense I’d say will be the key. If you can play a full possession of D you give yourself a chance. I guess it’s easier said than done though because they play the most boring basketball imaginable.

What has been two of the most glaring issues with this team so far consistently this season?

1. lack of rebounding physicality (not a good thing against VA its their calling card.)

2. Patience on offense quick shots not passing the ball around hero ball.

Two things that you cant do against VA these are the two issues we are terrible of committing!

AND THEN play really good defense(#1 scoring defense in the nation). look for a low scoring game. If UofL can score 35pts a half.........UofL wins

LOL everything you basically said is true. PROBLEM IS THIS TEAM HAS NO ON BALL PRESSURE PLAYERS other than Perry and Sutton whoare both high foul prone guys. And against this team don't expect a freshman to perform well. We only have one true ball handler Q Perry is to erratic i don't like the matchup for Ryan in this game he is not athletic enough with the ball. I've just written this game off as a loss hopefully some things go our way and we can pull the upset. They are going to have problems with that big guy Salt refs will allow him to be physical Ray, Anas and Williams will be fouled out . The other players are just going to have to dig in and give weak side help every time but this team just hasn't showed the toughness to get dirty and play smart without fouling.

Me thinks you underestimate the total package as probably many teams do. There not 19-1 or whatever coming off a win against Duke for nothing.

Not underestimating them, especially against the Cards. But they're not this great rebounding team. It's their defense and pace on offense that has won them games.

Maybe we're getting them at the right time- off a huge win at Duke. They had a key player go down, too, so maybe he doesn't play or isn't as effective. I'm grasping for straws. It will be an immense challenge to beat them on their floor. We'll need to hit shots at a better than average percentage, and for a bench player to provide unexpected production.

Is this a gut feeling thing? Why would a loss to Miami indicate a win against UVA? Honestly I think we lose at UVA and rip off 5 straight wins with the last one being UNC at home.

I'm trying to stay positive about UofL's chances against UVA, but I have a bad feeling Salt may have a huge game against the Cards. For some reason he is the exact type of player that our front courts always have trouble with and end up making them look like All Stars for one game.

I really don't see how anyone can predict a Cards victory. Of course it's possible but very unlikely. It's wishful thinking for any Cards fan to predict a win. I hope they're right but I just don't see it.

In Virginia's case, a lot of that is probably due to less shots being taken overall due to the way they impose slow pacing. Man I hate watching them play.

My hope for this game is the Cards avoid an injury.

This series has been far too lop-sided - but it shouldn't be a surprise considering the style of the programs.

For years they have been built for the regular season, a steady product that has no trajectory. They are what they are pretty much from day one.

Cards have always had the approach of the journey. Head scratching losses, ups and downs - but then more post season success when compared to UVA.

I got nothing against them if they ever break through I'd be happy for them.

A lot of the heads-up games go their way because they usually have grown ups that are bigger and stronger than our guys lean approach. A lot of contact is allowed which gives them the upper-hand. I expect more of the same this year but would love to be surprised.

Seriously, the Cards cannot afford poor shot selection against the Cavs. crisp solid passing is a must. The extra pass is a must. Defensive rebounding is a must. The more possessions the better because they will ALL count. UVA will have the best defensive team the Cards have faced to date and maybe for the year. We cannot turn the ball over and survive.

1. Shot selection.
2. Defensive rebounding.
3. Limit turnovers.
4. Hit high percentage of FG's and FT's.

We do that, we win.

This game is going to be interesting to me because the Virginia coach does great during the regular season when he is playing against teams he is familiar with. When he gets in the NCAA tournament and plays against teams he is not familiar with he sucks.

He sure did have CRP's number but Padgett and staff could throw some wrinkles at him that he is not prepared for. I would love to see our staff keep him off guard and see if he can adjust.

This is a matchup that just makes no sense. The best players on the court wear red and black. The deepest team wears red and black. The more athleic team wears red and black. The tallest team wears red and black.

Yet, Virginia are 10 point favorites. Almost everyone predicts a Cavs win. All because of a slow pace offense and a defensive scheme that packs the paint area.

It's still hard to believe that is enough to win all those games.
