Yeah, that was pretty symbolic. Actually, I thought the dog was ready to go and the problem was more with the Frisbee thrower (coach?), and maybe that was symbolic too.
And after a lackluster performance for the first 31 minutes of the game, the Cards pulled within 3 points and the crowd was really into it. But only one team played with any energy and determination from that point forward. Actually, Va Tech turned it up a notch and the Cards seemed to lose interest. Sad.
I watched the two teams closely during the second half timeouts... Va Tech's team was closely bunched together and listening to the coaches. Our team was much more spread out and not as interested. In fact, there was a timeout when Lands was way outside the circle and another time when Ellis was way behind everyone, neither of them listening or paying attention to any coaches or teammates. Sad.
They folded... Ellis didn't get a call on a drive to the goal... and so his body language changed... then James... going 1 on 3... and refs didn't "kow-tow" to him either.. and so HE folded. From there, seems like the entire team quit.
The whole night set the usual theme for EVERY game we have played.
4 big men and 1 Shooting guard... playing against 3 or 4 guard lineups with 1 or 2 big men. Opposing coach goes RIGHT against KP's strategy of "I want big men with length to guard little guards"... by literally whipping the ball around and having the guards "dis-balance" our defense. You get big men cheating off of guards in the corner or guards on the elbows, because the ball handler literally gets 3 or 4 steps on the "Mike James" or "Kamari Lands" or whomever is guarding him... and zips into the lane. 1 or 2 passes later, there is an open 3-point attempt or back door dunk from where KP's defenders are chasing smaller faster players...
We look slow... as usual... no re-action... just pathetic. I pointed this out, weeks ago, on the other board that when we beat GT... it wasn't that we beat GT.... its that GT couldn't get their shots to fall. We left them open... Same thing happened to Clemson... VT started out the same way... and then they started hitting their shots.
We had no energy for almost the entire game... and we played with almost NO physicality for massive spurts.
Again, they all have a losing mentality... and a quitter's mentality. They don't have the wherewithal to try to turn up the heat... or impose their will on ANYONE... The most dominant game we had, was against WKU... every other game has been a struggle.
Payne's coaching has been something wonderous to behold. He can get players in position... but he lacks the ability to motivate them to greatness. He can't even get them HYPE.... You watch Sydney Curry just chugging up and down the floor missing rebounds, not getting second rebounds... You watch a guy like Withers... not take ANY shots, for almost the Entire game and just roam around listlessly... You watch how everything we do is mechanical and NOT organic... even guys starring down guys for passes in the post and cross court... and you begin to understand KP hasn't, can't, and maybe won't impose his OWN will or Identity on this team... because HE, as a coach doesn't have an identity yet. We look SLOW... and of course... his sad sack "mockery" of DEnny Crum's system is neutered by playing 4 bigs and a shooting guard... makes the guys look even slower. This was all on display yesterday... James proved to everyone HE IS A BIG... he missed a variety of "incompletly squared-up" 3-point shots, and drove down in the paint to go 1 on 2 and in some cases, 1 on 3, for success. He is literally a power forward... being pushed into a SG body... Then you have Withers... who loses his man, every time, on screens or in the wings... and then you have Curry, biggest guy on the court... whom always seems to move too slow and without urgency... followed by Traynor... who has lots of skill and athleticism, but no strength or power... We play in a league where most of the team use 3 guard lineups... Payne's system will not work in this league... not with what we have. And the sadder fact is motivating players is not 100% on the coaches. The players have to have some pride or dignity. They have to have some fight in them. What we been watching, for past months is basically "Zombie Basketball" in various forms... 28 days later zombies, that over well their opponents.. and then Walking dead zombies... All can be defeated like our team... just depends on the effort that you put into your fight against them. The zombies ALWAYS lose in most of the movies...
Here is what I look forward to. I hope we have a much better season next year. We are bringing in more talent... But, if for some reason, we don't... guess what? Payne will have basically recruited a good roster for the next coach..
