Question About NCAA Sanctions

To those that DON'T think the still to be determined punishment for the FBI scandal has any negative effect whatsoever on the program.

I'm asking why you think it has zero negative impact on the program, be it in recruiting etc.?

Is it because you believe there will be no further punishment/sanctions from the NCAA? Or do you think there will be, but that even if it is severe that recruits, fans, players, etc don't care about it?

Not saying anyone is right or wrong here just genuinely curious about this point of view.

We better hope that it is the possibility of sanctions that is negatively impacting recruiting, because if it is not then our program is a sinking ship.

Any player who commits to a program and then that program is put on NCAA probation barring any postseason play should be allowed to go elsewhere without an impact on their eligibility. They should be allowed to transfer anywhere they want without sitting out a year. Will that happen, not sure but why should potential recruits be punished for something they were not a part of. Plus factor in that no staff member who was a part of it is still around. I see probation... just to make sure nothing happens like this again.

I’m not saying it’s zero affect but recruits need to do their homework, don’t speculate, and hope the staff is as honest as they can be. Honestly I think it boils down to whether you want to play for Mack or not (unless you’re there for the right reason which is to get a U of L education).

My belief is action was taken by removing our HOF coach and HOF AD after the pay for play so called scandal. It also wouldn't surprise me that the NCAA decides to make up to UofL for some of the punishment dished out due to the POS scandal by a slap on the wrist for the so called second offense.
You can say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one.

I think cleaning house of the program was good enough for the NCAA. We may get some more scholarship reductions, but I think we will come out ok.

I know people are skeptical about it after the banner was taken, but remember during that investigation Rick and Tom kept their jobs. Andre McGee refused to cooperate. Although the University did cooperate, there really wasn’t action to punish the coach after basically admitting what happened.

Rick hasn’t coached a game for UofL in 3 years. The player involved never touched the floor for UofL, so there’s nothing to vacate. Ryan McMahon is the only player that’s still in the program that played a game for Rick. No one involved is here anymore.

We are going to find out soon. Keep those fingers crossed.

I think the NCAA is going to go easy on us this time. They’ve dragged their feet on our part of this case because we cleaned house as described above.

The NCAA, I believe, will take into consideration that this kid never not only played here he didn’t even participate in an official practice. What might be a problem is that his parents were “put up” at the Galt House and had a furnished SUV. In our favor is the fact that there is not a single person that “could have been responsible” left at UofL. We’ll see soon enough. I was informed that even though we haven’t actually gotten a NOA yet that AD Tyra and other UofL officials have been having meetings with the NCAA on more than one occasion. The fact that they (the NCAA) have been willing to do these meetings could be a positive for UofL. At least I certainly hope so. In any case, I’m hoping that UofL is ready, if necessary, to fight like hell if the NCAA attempts to come down too hard on us.

It's all for show anyway. NCAA sanctions haven't improved the culture that leads to violations at any school. If anything it breeds an even worse environment. The fans put even more pressure to win on the program. The coaches know they have to cheat in order to survive.

Everyone is just hoping they're not the next to get caught. Rinse and repeat.

Man I just want this to be over already. What is taking so long anyway? This scandal has been hanging over the program for far too long so the sooner it is 100% over, the better.

I never hear a discussion about it except this website and the occasional radio wisecrack...

Man, I'd like to believe this stance but I just can't right now. The main reason is because when has the NCAA ever given UofL and its fans the benefit of the doubt?

The thing about the NCAA is they like to feel like they are in control. With all of the schools just going about their business and not firing their coaches, the NCAA will take that as a slap to the face. Kinda like what we did with Rick during the KP scandal.

Baylor never got in trouble for hiding domestic violence because they fired Briles and the AD. It’s the scorched earth policy. And it’s worked before.

Do you think there will be no more sanctions against the Cards?
I don't have any idea, but I don't know why the NCAA is waiting to decide U of L's fate when all of the info is out there to base that decision.

If the entire scope of U of L's issues is third party payment to a player, I could envision nothing more happening since very soon, that's probably not gonna be an NCAA infraction...

Maybe the NCAA thinks the delay will be punishment enough. I’m actually only partially kidding here. Yeah who knows what those dumbasses in Indy will do. They are the very definition of inconsistency. And I agree about the “since very soon, that’s probably not gonna be an NCAA infraction . . . “ comment. About the only thing I can come up with that they might get us with would be a lack of institutional control since “dick” claims not to have known anything about anything/nothing.:p;)

I think the issue is there are so many schools currently under investigation over an assortment of reasons and the NCAA deals with one case at a time. Perhaps them taking this long means our case is no longer a top priority... hope!

They'll probably grandfather our 'infraction' so they can continue to slam us. That's why the NCAA itself just needs to be dissolved. The NCAA concept has outlived its usefulness.

If you're going to dream, dream big I always say.. I'm with ya though, I'm hoping that shows good faith on our part. I mean after all what else could we have done, the kid never played a minute here so what harm was done..

The NCAA said they were going to focus on the schools that had eligibility issues first. I think that is what has played out so far. Louisville didn’t have have that issue. That explains the delay.

A couple things in their favor no one left, no real testimony implicating the coaches knew about the money with Bowen, and the other issues are pretty minor easily denied. Fair is the one that is dicey but the player never got paid and never went to Louisville.

The “cleaned house” argument always makes me scratch my head...

If it potentially carries so much weight, why didn’t that change the outcome of our appeal, which was decided AFTER said house cleaning?

I’m not sure we’re facing big penalties or any. But I also think it’s not gonna matter what we did after the fact. I’d even argue such a quid pro quo encourages moral hazard among onlooking institutions. Just break rules, clean house if you get caught, and pick up your “get outta jail free” card...

All good points here; my sense is the NCAA will initiate formal notice of allegations to UL, but confine it to the impermissible benefits to Bowen Sr family. I expect UL will be successful defending itself with both parties involved in the actual exchange of $1,300 testifying that it was not tied to Jr attending UL, but rather a humanitarian gesture. I expect the NCAA to treat it as a minor infraction with no significant penalty.
