Based on the formation and down/distance I felt like I could pretty accurately tell what play was coming. That’s a really bad thing. Ole Miss defenders certainly were paying attention in film session because they were staying at home when they were supposed to and not falling for any misdirection we ran. If someone at home knows what play is coming, that does not reflect very well on the play calling. Must say that I’m quite concerned about Satt’s ability.

I believe Cunningham’s post game comments were most insightful and explains the disastrous first half performance. For whatever reason this staff was so confident that Ole Miss was going to defend with 7 in the box; they failed to prepare for the 3 man DL and 8 off the LOS that was employed.

I agree. Both of these are ALL on coaching.

I thought this was a telling stat.

Louisville called 38 pass plays, and 39 run plays. In a game where they were down 16 points very early in the 2nd quarter and were down 26 points by halftime. In a game where basically through 3 quarters they were down multiple scores Louisville still called 1 more run play than pass play. In a game where Louisville NEVER looked good running the ball Satterfield still called 39 plays while trailing by multiple scores.

Satterfield called 39 run plays in a game where his RBs were averaging 3.5 YPC.

Roughly it looks like we ran 33 plays in the first half. 18 run plays and 15 pass plays. Satterfield called run plays on first downs 5 times and pass plays 6 times. Whats more confusing is the distance of some of those 18 run plays including first down here are the distances during those 18 run plays 10, 10, 10, 7(2nd), 1 (3rd) 1 (4th) 10 (2nd), 10, 10 , 10, 11 (3rd) , 16 (2nd) 10 (2nd), 10 (3rd), 10, 3 (4th), 11 (2nd), 2 (4th) Some of those down and distance run calls are utterly confusing, especially when you consider how little success Louisville was having. I think the longest run by a UofL RB in the first half was like 8 yards.

The 39/38 run to pass stat is misleading. 18 of those runs were by the quarterback, so we don’t really know how many pass plays were called.

We can make a simple estimate by assuming that 50% of the QB runs were called pass plays. If you do that, then the run/pass ratio is 30/47, which is 61% pass.

I think Scott is a good play caller, but the problem is that he's calling plays on a team without an offensive coordinator. We lose Ponce who was in charge of the QBs and pass game and Ledford who was OC and really the hear and soul of the offense.

Pete Thomas had his first real job as a grad and quality control guys at App State in 2017. Bicknell is just a line coach and not really a replacement for Ledford. Gunter Brewer has the experience, but it feels like he's just with the wideouts and Scott is in charge.

Look at the staff, our top 2 assistants are Cort Dennison and Bryan Brown. Both defensive guys. But who is the offensive leader? Scott can't just do it on his own.

My opinion? Promote Gunter Brewer to OC and WR coach and pass game coordinator. He was the co-OC at OK State with Dez Bryant and they finished top 25 both years. He was OC under Larry Fedora during some of the good years of his UNC tenure, although it did not end well. But Gunter is a proven play caller at this level and even if Scott still calls plays, let Gunter have some say so in the offense and at least have someone in charge.

Great idea LF4E. Does the staff read this board and better yet....or they receptive to ideas from keyboard warriors?
