Everyone keeps asking if KP can turn this ship around eventually. Here is the ultimate issue I see, it's his personality. Think about it, most of the time he is standing on the sideline coaching like an NBA coach. College Championship coaches have to have the "WOW" factor to them to win a championship. Think about it, since 1990 I would argue that only 1 team wince then did not have that type of coach (UConn's Kevin Olley). Think about when a Pitino, Coach K, Self, Calhoun, Donovan, etc. would walk into a room everyone is looking, stopping what they are doing, and listening. If KP walked into a room do you see that happening? Louisville's last championship was 10 years ago when these recruits were 10 years old. If they can't remember the nostalgia of that, then the coach MUST have that personality to get them to want to come to Louisville. I am just not seeing this right now. This is why I feel like things are not looking too bright.

GO CARDS!!!

That’s an observation, not a solution. Unless your solution is to either get another Coach or for KP to undergo a personality transplant.

I’m hoping we’re in the opening episodes of Ted Lasso Season 1, college basketball style.

Coach who knows nothing about coaching the sport comes in and makes a bunch of bumbling mistakes. Team gets pounded and embarrassed. Finally teams buys in and gets it turned around 🤷🏻‍♂️ Idk?? I’m at a loss.

^^^ so far KP has said his main coaching goal is to instill confidence, obviously he wasn't talking about the fan base lol, but none of these kids have any and it doesn't come overnight. but it wouldn't surprise me if at some point things start clicking and you see by the end of the year we believe in ourselves but until it gets in their heads, their heads will always be in the way

I don't think there are too many WOW HC's out there. It's a new era. You got a few throwbacks still doing it a certain way at a high level. For sure.

Nothing WOW about Scott Drew or Tony Bennett really. They come off pretty mild mannered. And Cal is a clown that just rambles and does silly stuff during games.

But title winning is a high bar anyway. There's some successful dudes carrying on a different style this era and as more of those relics step aside it might be your new normal.

I think the overall issue with Payne could be that he doesn't know how to coach and he may not be able to get the talent he needs. But I don't have a lot of data on that just yet but it sure looks like it so far.

it's a fair point but every team, no matter what sport, always looks great in camp (how many times have we thought the football team would be dominant) only to come out in real competition and get clobbered. jsut becasue you pump guys up all during the time when there are no games and no real competition doesn not mean they are going to keep that confidence once they get smashed. they had none last year, had none this year and then came out and lost three straight 1 pointers knowing they weren't going to win in maui so thus doesn't matter what was done before, any confidence they had went out the window the first game they played. they got punched in the face and have no idea how to recover yet

I think if KP had any coaching ability whatsoever he would have at least won one of these games! I don’t see how the man can honestly cash his paycheck!

we lost three games by 1 point where we missed free throws and ellis thought he was going to get fouled and just stood there instead of moving forward. players lost not the coaching. we could easily be 3-2.

Has nothing to do with pumping guys up. How about coaching them on how to play basketball, how to run an offense, how to block out, how to space the floor, the basic fundamentals...

I think he spent the whole 8 months teaching them "culture" Now they know the culture of losing.

The University of Louisville is not a place where you come to learn how to coach.

But we’re not and we’re paying 3.3 million for this debacle!

here's a simple math equation for everyone, so chill out...

HAPPINESS = REALITY / EXPECTATION

and in case you are not good at math it says the more expectations you have the less happy you will be. for some reason folks here had some expectations of a bad team with a new coach who has never coached. i didn't want KP here but i support him and have no expectations of him turning around a group that was not good to start. let the cake bake a year first and see what happens but complaning now when there was no hope of being good is just plain moronic and only upsets you because you have expectations. give them up and relax and enjoy the spectacle that is u of l sports.

I guess you and I are just different kinds of fans.. This is University of Louisville basketball, you don't get to come in here unprepared as a beginner coach and tell everyone to be patient, especially while getting beat by mid majors at home and getting wasted by two top 10 teams and our old neighborhood friend Sin Sin ati.. Fire that Joker today.

I knew this was a giant challenge. They finished out 2-13 or something like that then 5 dudes transferred out on him and he pulled just 2, and one is Master P's kid.

A lot of people out on social media probably hyped this way too much. And when they start making these predictions about Tyrese Hunter and then DJ Wagner coming here fans are caught off guard when nothing approaching this actually happens.

Fans are nervous about his coaching chops so they expect talent. And when he whiffs on talent in the portal and the first HS class is just okay but missing that high end guy, they get annoyed. And then they get served an 0-6 sandwich that don't taste good. At all.

Now some fans say give him time and I'm just gonna sit back and see how it all plays out. I've never seen something like this at UofL so I don't really know how to unpack it. The NCAA destroyed this program. We don't even know if his bosses care.

UofL fan has been suffering and now it's rock bottom. I can't hate on anybody that throws the sink off the rooftop.

Sure you do. What's the alternative? KP isn't going to be fired this season unless he does or says something that would get most any coach fired.

Patience is the only thing Cards fan have. It's not going to go well this season so you might as well accept it. Do it by not watching the games if you choose. I didn't watch those last 5 games during that disastrous 2018 football season after BP was fired. We were literally the worst division 1 football team at the end of that season.

Now four seasons later the Cards are #25 in the football playoff poll and has its best recruiting class ever.

Basketball will return to where it belongs. It's just a matter of how long. Certainly not the 2022-23 season.

He needs to add anything from 6-8 players through late HS signing and/or the portal to be competitive next year. Not saying he can't do it.

I hope he can make something happen there. He's got 2 nice players coming in I'm unsure how ready to contribute they are. Gotta believe James, Lands, and BHH are a decent start for building a rotation.

I hope he gets those 6-8 players, but call me skeptical based on his performance so far. I didn’t like the hire when it happened and I like it far less now.
