Didn't hit the ball so just dropped 3rd strikeout...Sometimes the rules of baseball confuse the hell out of me. Why wasn’t that “strikeout, passed ball, run scored and no out, batter advances to first base” not a simple foul ball? How in the hell could any catcher be expected to catch that after it glanced off the bat above the head of the umpire at 90+ mph?

Injuries may have played a part but both Bevin and Forbes have been major disappointments. 3 or so years in the program and both are struggling. Comparing their stats to other ACC programs "big guns" is quite sobering. To make matters worse, Michael's performance - stats are now trending in the wrong direction. It really is amazing what they have done with the group. They don’t have one weekend starter that can go 4-5 innings consistently. Give them Notre Dame’s 3 staters and the closer, this team they would be excellent.
Coaching hasn’t been the issue. The entire problem was how they built the pitching staff knowing they were stacked offensively. I really don’t think they did the work necessary to find key pitchers in the portal. Cutts hasn’t been good which is a surprise but none of the other guys were highly thought of.
None of the returning pitchers were weekend guys. I think Bevin and Forbes should have been flipped. Bevin the starter and Forbes the closer. Even with that neither of those guys know how to pitch. They needed weekend guys at least 3 from the portal that knew how to pitch at this level. Then pray a couple freshman are ready.
With that said this weekend the offense was the problem. They didn’t have a good weekend.
What? Not coaching? Who recruits? Who recruits the portal? Cutts hasn’t been bad. Leaving pitchers in too long is coaching. Not having pitchers warmed up and ready is coaching. Not choosing the right pitchers to enter the game is coaching. It really is amazing what they have done with the group. They don’t have one weekend starter that can go 4-5 innings consistently. The explanation is just that it is baseball. I agree that we need to remain optimistic but just to show you how important getting seeded #1 or #2 in a regional is. Since 1999:Just a note to my fellow UL Baseball Fans; “hang in there, hope springs eternal”. We need to stick together, as we suffer through one disappointment after another. It would be different if there was no hope, but this is a team that has demonstrated at times some rather impressive performances. Our first baseman, our second baseman and our shortstop have been exceptional most of this season, and defensively our outfield has been as good as any in the ACC. Our overall hitting with a healthy Klein in the lineup is as good as there is; just no explanation for what happened in South Bend this weekend.
Well, every coach makes decisions it either works or it doesn’t. The reality is when a coach puts someone in the game it is up to them to throw strikes. When they do great decision and when they don’t bad decision. Sometimes it is OK to let the pitcher work through an inning. Don’t have the stats but it is probably 50-50.What? Not coaching? UND’s staff was a level up above ours for sure.Well, every coach makes decisions it either works or it doesn’t. The reality is when a coach puts someone in the game it is up to them to throw strikes. Recruiting is a big part I said I don’t understand their philosophy in today’s world. You can’t rely on freshman. You also can’t be solely reliant on your process to get guys ready and assume they will be better pitchers. They have done that a lot recently. The weekend guys have been bad.
It is weird in terms of how good they were with pitchers and now how bad it has gone. I don’t get the shift.
In terms of offense good pitching always limits offense. Not surprised by their struggles. My surprise is Notre Dame weekend staff is much much better than Louisville. Saturday wasn’t a good day.
I get what you're saying but this team is so up and down. I can't see them stringing very many wins together. Yeah they have shown flashes, like against Clemson and FSU then struggle against some middling teams.. That's why this is one of the most frustrating teams we've had under CDM.Just a note to my fellow UL Baseball Fans; “hang in there, hope springs eternal”. Agreed; this “up and down” performance trend is most disappointing.I get what you're saying but this team is so up and down. I can't see them stringing very many wins together. Im always pulling for them but a lot of games I can't even listen. Hopefully they can put something together down the stretch.
The simple answer is that this is pretty common. Similar to what the Orioles are currently experiencing at the MLB level. I think the O's have the 3rd worst ERA in the league so naturally their hitters are trying to hit 2 and 3 run HR's instead of just getting on base for the next guy. Next guy is doing the same thing. They know they need to score at least 4 to 5 runs to even have a chance at winning. Our Cards are different in that they can be overly aggressive on the bases but that is Dan's MO. Although it is pretty successful against non conference teams, once you start playing the upper tier ACC teams, it can definitely lead to rally killers. I don't see any signs of open frustration with this team so I think they are still connected to each other. Injuries have definitely played a hugh part, especially Klein and Dettmers, but again once we get into regional play, can we be consistent, both on the mound and at the plate.Agreed; this “up and down” performance trend is most disappointing.
Just a question, is it possible our roster is losing both confidence and focus after witnessing one walk, one HBP, and one wild pitch after another? I am not sure our players are any different than those of us expressing our own disappointment on this board after witnessing this pattern play out so often?
