I stated yesterday that I would post on this subject. Here it is.

P5's are universities with major FB (and other) athletics programs. The designation/appellation is arbitrary and is applied by media members nationwide to indicate generally higher levels of FB excellence and fan-following. MBB and other sports typically take a back seat when media makes the P5 designation. (It is generally understood that roughly 80% of media contract value for distribution to conferences and then on to member schools is related to FB and not MBB).

There are currently five P5 conferences (ACC, Big Ten, Big XII, SEC and Pac-12) and 65 current P5 teams (FB Independent Notre Dame is also regarded as a P5 FB school). Of the 65 current P5 teams, 13 are Private and 52 Public. Pittsburgh classifies themselves as a state-related university. Meaning Pitt elects to be regarded as both Private and Public. In about 2 seasons, four additional universities will join the Big XII and likely become regarded as P5 schools as well.

The Private universities are typically funded by private sources, most of the time without significant federal or state funds.

The Public universities are all state and federally funded. Mostly state. Many grants come from federal and sometimes private non-profit sources. Public universities use state tax dollars from state taxpayers. (The grants and research funding they receive can be regarded as coming mostly from federal taxpayers).

The Public P5's are located within 33 of the 50 U.S. states. In each case, state taxpayers must support the 52 Public P5 universities located within those 33 states having such institutions. In some cases the state and its taxpayers are called upon to subsidize and support operations and shortfalls within the P5 athletic departments. The population of each state becomes relevant in determining the state's ability to support the Public university and its P5 athletic programs.

Some states have much higher or lower available population per P5 school from which to provide support. There are lightly and heavily populated states. And the number of P5 institutions within them varies.

For discussion, here is a listing of the 33 states having current Public P5's. The state's available population per Public P5 is noted. In each case the number of Public P5's within the state is noted.

This list is in rank order by "State Population per Public P5 University".
