Pretty commonly now the P5 is broken into the "P2" (B1G and SEC) and the "M2" (ACC and B12), in terms of earnings, stature, brands, size, relevance, etc.
My analysis here compares the most recently available Louisville Revenues (2022-2023) to those of the others of the "New P2" and to the "New M2", ... that is, after the current realignments will have taken place.
There is no certainty for FSU, so they're not placed in the P2. They remain in the ACC (and M2) for 2024.
For 2024, 4 Pac-12 schools go to the B12, another 4 Pac-12 schools to the B1G, and 2 Pac-12 schools to the ACC. Also SMU to the ACC. And Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC.
Washington State and Oregon State are eliminated as either P's or M's.
This does not have the Private universities included. Just Publics. Pitt is always a tweener in this regard, but is considered a Private here.
This is a look at Revenues only (not Expenses or Debt) and does not try to account for any possible increases in Revenues from upcoming ESPN/Fox/CBS deals or from the College Football Playoff enlargement.
There will be, in the 2024 season:
New P2:
New M2:
For the 47 Public Universities reporting (note: Florida and Arizona are not included, as their data has not yet been made available, and Oregon State and Washington State are not included because they are not in the New M's or New P's):
We should all be pleased that Louisville's Revenue is as high as it is. Especially during such tough times with MBB. Lower revenues than only 26 Public University Athletics programs (23 of them in the B1G/SEC)!! Higher revenues than 5 other Publics in the ACC! Higher Revenues than 11 Publics in the B12. Higher Revenues than 6 Publics in the Big Ten and SEC !!
Louisville is special.

New P2:
Big Ten: 2 Privates, 16 Publics
SEC: 1 Private, 15 Publics
New M2:
ACC: 8 Privates, 8 Publics (ND is not included in either category)
Big 12: 3 Privates, 13 Publics
The 14 Privates (plus Notre Dame) do not report their Revenues directly. The 52 Publics do report their Revenues. That's 67 schools total ... of which 52 have Public reportable open data. For the 47 Public Universities reporting (note: Florida and Arizona are not included, as their data has not yet been made available, and Oregon State and Washington State are not included because they are not in the New M's or New P's):
Average Revenues for 47 Public Universities reporting were: $161,791,780
Louisville had Revenues of $142,806,809.
23 Public Universities from the New P2 had higher Revenues than Louisville.
ONLY 3 Public Universities from the New M2 had higher Revenues than Louisville: Clemson, Florida State, Texas Tech
6 Public Universities from the New P2 had lower Revenues than Louisville. Ole Miss, Missouri, Rutgers, Purdue, Maryland, UCLA
14 Public Universities from the New M2 had lower Revenues than Louisville.
If the P2 were to ever increase its membership, and Revenues were a prime consideration, Louisville would be strongly in the mix. But realistically, that's never happening. (Mostly because of Academics and Intra-State Politics)We should all be pleased that Louisville's Revenue is as high as it is. Especially during such tough times with MBB.
