Memphis' best player wants to transfer.

Nichols was a 5 star recruit ranked 17th nationally in the 2013 class. He's from the Memphis area which has long been known as a division 1 hotbed for basketball talent.

If Pitino wants him, and if the kid wants to come to UofL, then I would be good with it for sure. This young man is talented.

I see he had offers from Duke, UT, Vandy, Auburn, and Virginia coming out of high school. One might guess he would take another look at those schools first, but I hope Pitino takes a look at him.

He hasn't been around in a long while, Ipart.....which probably means he'll show up any time now. lol

As for Nichols, I doubt he would consider playing at UofL mainly because the position is so crowded right now. I would like to have him if Pitino wants him and if Nichols wants to be here but I don't see it happening.

After Pookie Powell was a bust, that fool won't be back for a while.

I think if Nichols came here, he would get the starting position before any of the competition for the spot. He is farther ahead than anyone we currently have in that role. Maybe Nanu, Johnson, or Anus will improve, but it is hard to see any of them getting better than Nichols would be in a year.

Nichols would probably be looking to turn pro after one year, given that he will have to sit out a year, and already has two years under his belt.

Nichols is really good I would love to see him at UL. I am in Memphis and they had the story on local news last night, they said he wants to transfer but Memphis won't grant him a release. They did not elaborate or explain what was going on but he is their best player and they were planning on building the team around him. His father said they might go the lawyer rout if he is not granted a release.

Wonder why Memphis is playing hardball with this kid.. Hmm

Memphis is being petty. He waited until summer to do this but a program should be bigger than a player and grant the release. Doesn't send a very good message to HS kids.

But, this is Memphis, and everything about their program has always been second rate.

They were talking about it again tonight, they still have not shed any light on what is going on. My gut feeling is that some big time school has approached him about transferring to their program. I don't have any insight or knowledge but I think it is Duke.

No inside info here, but my best guess is he's interested in going to UT, and that is just not acceptable in Memphis. I think it would be akin to a player going from UK to UofL (remember Marvin Stone RIP) or vice versa.

You might be right but right now Memphis is a better place to be than UT, the Vols have dropped into the abyss since Bruce Pearl was fired. They have a lot of work to do before they are relevant again, I can't see leaving Memphis for UT it would be more like transferring from UL to WKU at this point.

I just read an interesting post on the subject on the Duke board, the inside information is that Nichols and his long time girlfriend have broken up. Nichols has lost some interest in playing ball and his father wants him to transfer and put some distance between him and the ex. The situation has nothing to do with Josh Pastner or anyone else within the program, interesting.

If this story is the truth behind it, it could explain why Memphis is not releasing him right now. They may want to talk with him about it and keep him from doing something too hastily.

It is reported here that the Memphis AD wants to talk with him. Again, if the story on the Duke board is true, I think that after this conversation, either he will stay or he will get his release.
