Hold on to your butts, the Captain Mangok era is upon us.

Rick Pitino announced Sunday
evening that rising junior Mangok Mathiang will be a captain for the
2015-16 season, but added that another could be added at a later date.

"I know Mangok is going to be one (captain)," Pitino said
after accepting the National Association of Basketball Coaches'
Metropolitan Award on Sunday. "I don't know who the others will be. I'm
hoping it'll be a fifth-year senior who has leadership qualities."

I will say this for Mangok - for a kid that has limitations offensively, he sure does have a positive attitude. His offense just is not going to improve to a point of averaging double figures and being a guy we can consistently throw it too. That's a given.

But, there are a couple things that I think are in his reach for improvement. He can try to wall his D a little better instead of always trying for the block. If he gets the block great, if he doesn't it's going to be an easy put back since he's leaving his man many times trying to get the blocks. He could also get better at keeping his blocks in play. He puts too many of them into the 3rd row. Maybe, just MAYBE... he can get some confidence on the high post shot. He nailed it vs UVA w/o hesitation - if he can somehow take that shot and knock it down at times he could help us there too.

He's a team guy.

As a captain, hopefully he can reign in his emotions just a little. I like the energy, but he does look for a little scuffle now and then and we can't have a captain woofing too much. Just my opinion on that.

Yeah good points about Mangok. His game has many shortcomings but you never doubt his effort. I actually feel more confident with him taking that foul line jumper than trying to score up close. lol. But hopefully he works on his defense and of course his post/offensive game some more.

Pitino acknowledges Mangok's flaws but he feels his positive attitude and work ethic win out for a team captain.
