It was announced today that the Memphis (State ;)) Tigers will play Louisville in New York on December 16th at Madison Square Garden. The match-up is part of the Gotham Classic tournament that is being put on by the Gazelle Group. This will be the 90th contest between the two programs, and Louisville holds the series record lead at 53-36.

Hope we're getting some $$$ because we'll have 500 fans in attendance in lieu of a home game in a struggling arena.

Would like to understand how this kinda game makes sense financially unless we receive a nice check for playing in it...

TV exposure (yeah I know, but it is) plus it is New York City. Playing in the Big Apple can't hurt recruiting. There's a ton of talent in New York City.

You really think there's gonna be a lotta "oh boy, Louisville's playing in town tonite!" heard on the streets of NYC? You know me and hard data... :)

I lived in the NYC area for 9 years in the 80s-90s. Louisville always drew a decent crowd to the Garden (a lot more than 500 people). The game will be on national tv and will generate a lot more interest than another December game against SW Tennessee St U at the Yum on ESPN3.

Don't have any way of knowing, but I like to speculate. I think Pitino likes the area, and I think the Cards have a decent following in the Big Apple. I know it can't hurt recruiting, and it'll probably be one of the best early season games for a national audience to tune in to.

I'm OK with it.

Memphis is going to be terrible next year. Probably the most intriguing question is if Pitino will be serving an NCAA sanctioned suspension at this time. Seems like a neutral site game in say Nashville would actually generate some ticket sales.

Half of Memphis's team transferred out, including a lot of their better players. From an opposition standpoint, this should be a gimme game.

Great. An even better reason to have Memphis on the schedule. Lose-lose, like LPT football...

Even better if Memphis State is terrible. I won't cry any tears for the Tigers. The game is on a Saturday in the middle of December in NYC. I like it.

I don't want to play Memphis ever again I hate these games and why CRP thinks it is good for Louisville fans I have no idea. This game only benefits Memphis we gain nothing from it and I am sorry to say CRP has a bad habit of losing games to former rivals or teams who have a connection to him.

He has a great record against his former assistants. Regardless of that Memphis is a train wreck and the only Louisville fans this benefits are the few alums in NYC and the big group of family and friends of Pitino's in NYC.
