Louisville vs Iowa

Down 21. We're getting worn down. Clark is like a female Larry Bird.
I have said this several times... She is female version of Larry Bird....
Very competitive..
I will say this... USC-jr is going to wear her out.
Bria Beal is there defensive ace. She is 6'2", moves like a guard, veryy physical, fast, and athletic. She chased Smith around last year... and then she chased around HVL... she had so many deflections and just enough disruption...

I hate Big 10 basketball... I know Jeff is real good friends with OSU's coach... but I hate them too.
Yes, I hate USC-jr as well... but any team that embarrasses us... I hate em and hate em good...

Right now we need a complete miracle, ie, we need Iowa to call completely apart.
Like another poster said up above... this game came down to us missing a TON of shots.

Bad passes early and leaving the wings wide open early didn’t help our cause, but Iowa us just a better team

There might have been a rule that I missed but how come when Clark is sitting out there dribbling the ball and Harris is in her face there is no count?

Has not been a good game for Russell... she has missed a lot of shots... Wide open... and didn't drive the ball like she normally does

As long as you dribble, there's no 5 second violation. This rule was changed years ago in the men's game. I assume it's also with the women.

Who has a lockdown defender? I mean we had Kasa who most would agree was one of the best defenders in the entire country.

Don't tell that to Caitlin Clark. Our 3 point shot defense has also been one of our shortcomings 😢

I cannot see anyone beating USC Jr. this year. Clark is as good as any WBB player that has played the college game, and she is not one-dimensional as her vision and ability to effectively make cross court passes is most effective. The comparison to Larry Bird or Magic Johnson is not an exaggeration.

However, watch Dawn Staley assign one designated defender to shadow Clark on both ends of the court. SC has the deep bench that can rotate one defender after another, making it difficult for Clark to play her normal game.

Clark will get some points, but I expect that Staley recognizes that over the course of the game, Clark will become both exhausted and frustrated after being hounded 94 feet for 40 minutes. We saw a brief glimpse of how effective that can be, when Jeff assigned Jones to begin the 2nd half to do exactly that. Regrettably, Jones decided to focus on the offensive end as well, resulting in losing Clark defensively when transitioning from defense to offense. Jeff had to take her out.

Staley witnessed it, and you can bet she will have prepared her roster to execute that with team discipline.

I agree HVL’s performance is being overlooked mainly because we lost. She was being guarded by bigger players all night and it didn’t stop her from scoring.

Good points and Jones did handle Clark for a moment. It will be interesting to see if Clark still gets her 10+ assists. But USCjr does have a deep bench, but Iowa has quality shooters too. It’s going to be fun to watch. Can’t stand USCjr especially CDS. So I hope Iowa can pull off the upset. We beat Baylor when we weren’t given a chance.

I am hoping that you are correct CardFirst, as I have been pulling against South Carolina for several years now. You are 100% correct about Iowa’s team being excellent shooters, but most of the shots that I witnessed against UL, were a result of Clark’s vision in finding wide open teammates on the wings or under the basket, which explains their increased shooting percentage.

Again, the only way to beat Iowa is by the opponent assigning a player to shadow and defend Clark on both ends of the court, which means facing Clark up and down the court for 40 minutes. Staley saw it firsthand, and she has the personnel to execute it.

If Iowa’s other players drain 3s like they did against us they can beat Carolina. They just refused to miss against us.

8/19 shooting means they kinda sorta did stop her.
She had 5 turnovers... these translated into steals for Iowa.
She was very much bothered by Iowa's length... and she was very much stopped.
They wore her out to the point where she had an Airball.. and just looked sheepishly around.
Not trying to take away her performance, but if she had 2 or 3 more inches... of course it would have made the difference.

They had 1 player shorter than 6'0" in their starting lineup... that was the 5'9" guard Marshall. THey had just enough length to bother CC, HVL and Robinson. Their coach knew what to do. Make our starters take contested 2-point shots shots and don't give them any 3's. HVL started hunting her shot... and she would get the ball stripped on PnR screens or while driving... Yes, she scored 27 points... just like she scored 21 points against USC-Jr last year...

Last year's team would have been batter matching because of Smith. She was 6'1"... and A. Smith was a long, fast, athletic 5'9" (she fell out of favor with Jeff, after hoisting up that 3-pointer against Miami in the ACC quarters, when Miami was making their comeback).

We just didn't have any answers. Jeff had CC guard Clark. Clark would do a little push off, clear space and hoist a 3... buckets. He had Harris guard her... and i have to say, Harris was sort of the most effective on her... but she got "swiched on" too. The entire season, I never EVER thought Jones was a lock down defender.... despite her being 6'2". She is gangly... and she moved in an upright matter with to much space between her movements. She did her best, but Clark would swish over her too (mind you that Iowa game was the first game, all season long. where I have seen her completely focused on 1 player). Jeff even tried Robinson on her... but she would shoot over her too after a complimentary cross over push off.

And then there were the strange moments where we would leave a 40% shooting 3-point team wide open... It was because we never had the length outside of th post.. tor really do the job. I watched Cochran, and LIz get caught on Pin-downs or curls and not follow a guard out to the wing... or baseline, amd then "boom" another 3-pointer.

This was a night where we needed more size. I would argue. that lack of defensive length has been a major sticking point regardless of how many "Rah-Rah, play hard and fast and you can win" pep talks folks like me would like to offer up. We got better defensively, but when you look at the Final 4, each team that made it. has an otherworldly player who has either played at a whole nother level all season, or has lifted their game to a whole nother level. I didn't think Amour had it in her to be the 2nd Best PG in the Final Four... let alone "lead" her team to the Final Four... and yet, here we are...
Clark is on another level, altogether, and would be interesting, if Iowa wins it all this year, if she comes back... We all know what South Carolina's "bigs" are capable of...they are elite... The girl for LSU... has basically taken her game to a whole nother level as well... she is probably the best WNBA ready player in the tournament next to Clark... (I could literally see her going #1 Overall)...
We have not had that type of game changing player since Engstler (Evants, Durr and Schimmel before her).

We need to get back to that level of player. I believe HVL is an All-American. I believe she is elite. I just don't feel like she is on that top level. Maybe next year.

If we had one more player who could score like her they wouldn’t be able to wear her down.
