ACC needs SMU to get in this year and we should all be cheering for the non big 2 throughout the playoffs. As evidenced by all the craziness in college football this year, I do think there is enough parity to make this year interesting. What we dont want is Oregon, OSU, Texas, and UGA in the final 4.
To some earlier points, money will continue to drive more success in the big 2, but they have not created much of a gap, yet, from what I can tell, especially in the Big 10. I think the SEC is still easily the best, but I just havent been overly impressed and would not put any of them as dominant as UGA and Bama have been in recent years.
The big fear is that when perception is created, the gap gets bigger.

What no one is thinking about is if Pizza Hut becomes the official Pizza of the SEC and Miller becomes the official Beer of the Big Ten. Or companies in the south like Coca-Cola, Chik Fil-A, etc. all do a SEC official partnership that gives money straight to NIL. The big sponsors don't do that now because it's not like a pro league and it's all spread out. But if the gap grows it will get too large even in NIL

Their TV money alone gives them resources to hire a staff way beyond ours. I mean it will be so hard for any ACC or Big 12 school to keep a coach unless they break the bank, but then if you pay big for a coach your budget for a staff gets smaller.

Like for example, Kentucky could hire a head coach that's worse than Brohm like a Stoops. But the problem is that they could hire position coaches and training staffs where they can double and triple the pay where their position coaches make more than our coordinators. They could have full analytic departments studying film and recruiting. It won't just be about having a better head coach any more, they could have pro football level organizations.

Right now the SEC gap is growing, look at the TV ratings on this chart. ABC is dominating the ratings every week with SEC games. That will mean less games for the ACC in major timeslots going forward. The less the public sees the ACC or Big 12 as legit then the lesser the brand value is. I know we hate them, but it's better for our league when Clemson, FSU, and Miami are all in the top 15. When those teams are good, that makes all their games matter and get bigger timeslots. Then everyone else benefits.

I suspect there are more good coaches than there are big paying jobs. Money doesn’t always buy success….see Tucker, Mel.

But more money for top assistants matters a lot more than 1 head coach in my opinion.

A bad head coach may not be able to call plays well, but they can go poach any OC they want. Like just say Brian Brohm was an elite playcaller hypothetically, Oklahoma or FSU could offer him $2 million to come call plays whereas we're paying him $700,000. We could go up more. Or we could want a young dynamic defensive position coach at a place like Georgia to move up, but Georgia could just pay that person more than we pay our coordinators.

Then talking about training staffs who can work on getting the players bigger and stronger. More Quality Control and Analysts to help with film, scouting, and other things. Like they could have a staff of analysts scouting recruits in the portal and looking at data to see who would be the best fit. Less work for the coach.

Yeah maybe a Michigan State can fail with Mel Tucker, but if he has more resources than us to build a stronger top to bottom program, then it wouldn't matter if Jeff was a better overall head coach. In today's game, 1 great head coach isn't going to be able to overcome all of the advantages these big programs will have where they really are treated like pro level organizations.

I work for YUM/Pizza Hut, I'll put a stop that shit!

There will be those upset but IU is not going to the playoff. They had just 154 total yards today. It was like their finals test and they failed. How can they be rewarded?

How many two and three loss teams would also be undefeated playing IU's schedule? Several in most people's opinion. How about the Cards even, Stanford not withstanding.

I think it would be more controversial if IU does make the playoff.

It will be interesting. I can't put a 3 loss BAMA, Ole Miss or aTm ahead of them and am doubtful about a 2nd and 3rd place teams from the Big 12. But I can see three teams from the ACC - Miami, SMU and Clemson jumping them regardless of outcome.

IU has a gawdy record but does not pass the eyeball test for me.

You're probably right unless OSU blows them out. Other teams losing will help the Hoosiers as well. BYU's loss helped IU as would a SMU loss. I only see one ACC team making it if SMU loses.

Imagine the uproar if Clemson made it in over IU.
IU is solidly in.. They went into that game ranked 5th, no way they drop all the way out. I mean damn, they lost to the number 2 team in the country on their home field. Not exactly a horrible loss..

They haven't beaten anybody. Not a horrible loss is not the criteria, at least it shouldn't be.

They haven't looked like a playoff team their last two games. They barely beat a 5 loss Michigan team. And their last game is the worst team on their conference schedule with Purdue.

So they're going to run the score up on Purdue like that means anything.

Depending on what happens next week, IU may get in just because they're in the Big 10, despite their schedule results that look more like Tulane's or Toledo's and does anyone think either of those teams would get in with one loss?

Some of what you say is true, but it doesn't matter, the CFP had them up to 5th in their rankings, they lost to the number 2 team in the country on their home field. They're not going to drop them 8 spots on that loss.

But why wouldn't they? Why do you believe they're not going to? Nothing is going to happen to them if they do.

It's not about how many spots you may fall, only what you gain. IU was that high for only one reason and that was zero losses. Once they were beaten handily by OSU, that opened the door for the voters to think they knew IU wasn't the 5th best team.

They're not sitting around counting spots for these teams. None of these rankings the last few weeks really matter. Only the final ranking does. There's no rule saying if you were #5 and then lost, you're guaranteed a playoff spot.

They're not rewarding overall record or ranking positions. If they believe a 3 loss team like Alabama for example, is better than Indiana, they're not going to concern themselves with where these teams were ranked last week.

I am seeing a projection by On3 that has IU at 11th, the last at large team in at this point.

Ahead of them, they have:
1. Oregon (projected BigTen champ - 1 seed)
2. Ohio State (5-seed)
3. Texas (projected SEC champ - 2 seed)
4. Penn State (6-seed)
5. Notre Dame (7-seed)
6. Miami (projected ACC champ, 3 seed)
7. Georgia (8-seed)
8. Tennessee (9-seed)
9. SMU (10-seed)
10. Boise State (projected G5 champ - 4 seed)
11 Indiana (11-seed)
16. Arizona State (projected Big12 champ - 12 seed)

It makes the whole system look stupid if a team drops from 5th to out of the poll with one loss to the number 2 team in the country on the road. And it wasn't like they were ran off the field. It was 7- 7 late in the first half. Alabama got beat worse by a 5 win team.

Looks to me that they will be in with a win over Purdue, but I don’t have any objections to the teams they have ranked above them.

Like it or not, the objection to IU was that the best teams they had played were 6-5 Michigan, Washington and Nebraska. They have played two teams tied for 7th, 2 teams tied for 11th, and then the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th teams in the Big Ten.

Out of conference, they had FIU (3-8), FCS Western Illinois (4-8) and Charlotte (4-7).

The game against Ohio State was their only chance to play a great team and to impress. They were able to compete very well for 20 minutes. The last 40 minutes was complete domination by Ohio State. IU simply could not block Ohio State’s pass rush when the Buckeyes would bring 5, or even 4 when they would threaten to bring 5 but drop one out at the snap.

They could have played us, a ranked team at the time, and made a big statement by beating the crap out of us on the road. But they chickened out, and as a result they are going to be sweating those final rankings.

I call that Karma….

There’s a reason they dropped that game. They wouldn’t have beaten us.

IMHO that's probably right. Also, the game was slated to be played at Louisville. I absolutely hated that they wimped out. But, I do think the Cards would have beaten them. And they expected a loss. So they did the best thing for their team.

I can't believe any Cards fan would say we would have beaten IU for sure after knowing we have already lost two home games. Louisville would have probably been a double digit favorite and IU would have been hungry to beat a ranked team to prove themselves.

It could have easily been another one score loss.

Louisville blew what could have been a special season, especially after losing to SMU. If we would have lost just to Miami, we would be playing them in a rematch for the ACC championship. I can't believe we would have lost to Stanford with the ACC championship on the line.

SMU is very similar to Indiana as both are huge surprises and both are strong offensively. Louisville for whatever reason just wasn't able to beat SMU at home and it could have easily been the same had we played IU.

It seems to me that JB doesn't care very much about doing well on Defense. To me, it's as simple as that. Until his value system is altered, there will be minimal progress on Defense.
