Happily watching the Cards baseball team on TV until NC State hits a game tying 3 run homer with two outs in the bottom of the 9th. Don't have a fuzzy feeling the Cards are going to win in extra innings and will lose their third straight game after being made #1.

Which reminds me of recent events and results in other Cardinals sports. The men are bounced in the first weekend to Michigan and then learn a few days later the NCAA is trying to sack Rick Pitino. Three players apply for the NBA draft and most opinions are we're going to lose Donovan Mitchell.

Then the lady Cards get shredded by 30+ to Baylor. They at least made the sweet 16 but with a roster of several McDonalds all-Americans, the Cards looked awfully overmatched against the Bears. After all that there was the undefeated Cardinal baseball team. They receive the #1 ranking and have lost two in a roll and just suffered the above mentioned 3 run dinger on a hanging curve ball.

Cards just scored a run in top of 10th inning. To be continued.....

Was that not the longest baseball game? The pitching changes! Oy, vey! We were at the 4.5 hour mark BEFORE the Wolfpack improbably tied it up in the 9th. But, that was a tough, much needed win. Also, on the bright side, spring football has started and UofL swimmer Mallory Comerford won the NCAA championship in the 200. Tied Olympian Katie Ledecky. There are some things looking up.

I pretty much only care about the results in basketball and football and then baseball on the next tier down. So yeah the past year has had some amazing highs (mainly top 3 ranking in football and Heisman). But lots of lowest of lows (crapping the bed in baseball last year, crawling the bed in football, NCAA sanctions and cramping the bed in bball)

I love where we're at across the board in athletics. Looking forward to the remainder of the baseball season, the rest of Spring practice, and what's in store next year. L's up!...

Nice reverse jinx on the baseball team op.

I'll take that win since we are officially in baseball season now.;)

Baseball: Anyone think McDonnell is beginning to get a reputation kind of like Cals? Recruits the best players in the nation, always ranked right at the top, but can't seal the deal?

You could make the same argument about Jeff Walz, but there are glaring differences IMO...

Lite doesn't just land the best players in the nation...he gets TWICE AS MANY as the next closest team. No one else is in the same discussion. And he represents LPT as an NBA farm club. They exist to funnel players to the next level for as much money as possible. They're far from college kids, and they don't really try to be.

None of that's true with McDonnell and Walz. They get really good players nowadays, but they're far from head-and-shoulders better recruits than any other team has. We simply get our share. And our kids are all L1C4. Even a transcendental player like Brendan McKay is in the background compared to his team. That's the way the programs are run.

Happy as hell both the baseball and women's basketball programs get really good players. That's not sufficient to win a championship, but it's a necessary element. We'll have to see if the coaching or a little good luck will eventually carry us...

I'm not as sure you could make the same argument about Walz as long as UConn keeps rolling. There's a major roadblock to winning the womens title.

True, but we're not matched up with UConn in the tourney every year. I don't think Jeff can use UConn as an excuse for not performing at the highest level--except of course, when we're in the title game against them!
