Just watched a Jeff Greer interview with Jeff Goodman and Rob Dauster. While I’ve always thought being an Adidas school was not good for our basketball program, Goodman convinced me in this interview that it’s a killer!

I’d say it’s time to examine getting out of that deal. Per Goodman you just can’t get the players as an Adidas school.

Also, of the current (as of today 2/12/22) AP Top 25 teams only four are not Nike:

Auburn - UA
Kansas - Adidas
Texas Tech - UA
Wisconsin - UA

Proof that Goodman knows what he’s talking about.

So are you saying St Jurich killed our athletics by hitching our wagon to Adidas? Tell me it ain’t so?

I would encourage anyone to go listen to that podcast. Lots of good stuff in there. Was an eye opener for me. A few thoughts from that:

- Kenny Payne is the right choice for UofL at this juncture
- the adidas relationship has cost us recruits
- Tyra did not do his job well enough in terms of NIL. No reason for us to be lagging in that area.

I've been wishing Louisville would go to Nike for over 20 years now ....its never going to happen.

BUT...

Shoe companies are less important now. NIL can change everything.....with Payne as our coach there are a number of very wealthy boosters who are likely to step up to the plate and finance NIL deals for recruits. Nike is still the king but I think they're strangle hold will lessen as time passes. Junior Bridgeman alone could finance NIL deals for the next decade..... his net worth is over $500 million. He could provide $50,000 a season for all 13 scholarship players on our roster for a decade and that would only cost $6.5 million over the 10 years. Realistically though Bridgeman can set up huge NIL deals and with Payne's track record and reputation with development (especially big men) there's absolutely no reason not to think we can't land 1 or 2 top 25 kids in every class and surround them with top 50-100 talent up and down the roster and go after a high end transfer every off season.

Don’t kid yourself. Again, Nike schools currently hold 21 spots in the AP top 25. Coincidence? No, it matters.

Absolutely Nike matters. You can go back through my posts and you probably won't find anyone on here who has posted more and complained more about Nike/Adidas and how Louisville needs to switch.

That was before NIL came into existence.

Nike has that many teams in the top 25 because Nike has nearly every good school under contract. Nike has nearly 60% of D1 under contract. Louisville, Kansas, Indiana, Texas A&M, Notre Dame, Maryland, Arizona State, NC State, Mississippi State, Washington, Miami, Auburn, South Carolina and Texas Tech are the only P5 schools that Nike doesn't have contracts with. How many of those schools are major bball schools? 3 top tier schools (IU, UofL, KU) and then a few second tier schools (NC State, Maryland, Auburn, A&M, Notre Dame) but they don't really have the options to put that many teams in the top 25.

I don't have a crystal ball but I just think NIL deals are going to outweigh shoe company affiliation moving forward....the more NIL gets developed across all of college basketball the more ability non-Nike schools are going to be able to get big time kids. Nike's still going to dominate because they have all the big schools under contract.

Everyone seems to praise Jurich, myself included. But, I think the Adidas contract was a mistake. While it did provide a ton of gear and a lot of cash it appears Jurich traded financial success for on the court (and field?) success.

If Nike was willing to play ball with UofL athletics, the Cards and a Jurich might have been better off accepting less and going with the swoosh.

I haven’t kept up so I don’t know but honestly from the stuff that I’ve been reading, 50K a year seems light for top level players. That number might not get any better talent than we have now.

With NIL being legal now the playing field is more level now. It’s the schools who can raise the biggest pot of money. I expect shoe companies influence to not matter that much now. Nike is not going to pay out a million dollars to influence a players decision. But a school can.
