1. NBA Scout Salutes Chris Mack

For weeks I’ve called NBA scouts to collect their takes on Louisville forwards Raymond Spalding and Deng Adel as well as the string of Kentucky players who have made themselves eligible for the NBA Draft.

But one scout wanted to discuss more than the players. He wanted to discuss Louisville’s new basketball coach — Chris Mack.

"They got a really good one," the scout said. "Really good. Give him a couple years and he’s going to win big there. He’s that good."

The scout said he routinely worked at least a half-dozen Xavier games during Mack’s nine-year run at Xavier. What impressed him wasn’t the Number One seed Xavier earned during the 2018 season.

"Look back at that 2017 season," he said. "He lost his point guard (Edmond Sumner) at the beginning of February. They lost something like six or seven (it was six) games in a row. People thought they were finished.

"But he held that team together and figured it out and then he took them to the Elite Eight. His teams play tough. They play physical. And they always play hard. Other than Jay Wright (of Villanova), there wasn’t anybody better in that league."

Hope he does well but he'll have to earn it. Anything other than that is just opinion. Not a naysayer. Just a wait and see before making any type of judgement or formed opinion kind of person.

I have been 100% on board with hiring Mack to replace RP as soon as the news broke that RP was gone. As an Xs and Os guy, with solid gameplan preparation, we will see results whether good or bad as soon as the season gets started. I personally see no issue at all with this as I think the guy can flat out coach based on the games I have seen from his days at Xavier. The main difference for us strategy wise will be the differences in defense, which will be night and day. Offensively will be fun as hell.

The area that still needs to be seen is Mack's ability to recruit at our level. We won't truly know until at least the 2019 class, however, the 2020 class will be true measuring stick.

Just a question... What does an anonymous NBA scout know about college basketball? And why would the guy have to be anonymous?
A fair point. Maybe he didn't want anyone to know that he speaks to Bozo.

I do happen to agree with the scout about the 2017 showing more about his coaching abilities than the 1 seed in 2018. Losing your best player in Feb. with a true freshman to replace him and making a tourney run was when I became sold on CCM.

om Jorgensen, one of the Magic's two scouts. When Hardaway was at the University of Texas at El Paso, ''he played in a slow, deliberate, half-court offense,'' Jorgensen says. ''But Hardaway is at his best in a wide-open game where he can run the court. That's why he's blossomed in the NBA.''

Jorgensen attends an average of 100 games yearly around the nation. An ''advance scout'' who looks over other NBA teams may spend even more time on the road. Last season, one of the advance scouts reportedly saw 186 NBA games. ''It's a great life if you love the game,'' Jorgensen says.

Jorgensen was former head coach at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, and an assistant at Michigan State University in East Lansing. He works out of his home in Denver, a centrally located city with good flight connections. His schedule begins with pre-season college tournaments in the fall and heats up during holiday tournaments. Last year he saw 32 games in December. By packing his schedule early in the year, Jorgensen can decide which players deserve attention in the last months of the season.

Answer your question Zippy?

I don't think one can really judge Mack on anything at this point other than he seems a pretty likeable guy. Recruiting and coaching are still waiting to bee seen.

Absolutely spot on. I've had the privilege of discussing some basketball with him while accompanying a former player on recruiting visits to X. His X's and O's and overall basketball knowledge is off the charts. He has forgotten more about basketball than most of us will ever know. Now if he can recruit or not will ultimately determine his success. It won't have anything to do with actual in game coaching strategies or X's and O's because as ULGrad stated, he can flat out coach. I believe we're in good hands boys.

I'd take his opinion over anyone on this board. The guy is an NBA scout who watches college players. Its not hard to believe he has a little bit of knowledge about the college game.

Where is this being quoted? It's not in the OP's link...

This is the point. Criticism or commendations are just opinions. Mack's record is what it is at this point.

Fluff pieces add little to the discussion. I'd at least like to know who's doing the fluffing...

Not a naysayer. Just not an enthusiast. I'll give him his fair share of time before any harsh criticism is directed his way.

Very, very gracious of you to give a guy “fair share of time”. Never mind he’s having to clean up the worst basket scandal since Baylor’s coached tried to cover up a murder.

Everyone has their own opinion, but at the end of the day no one knows if is Mack going to compete at the highest level. I like he is super competitive and he teams outperform their talent level. He has the same kind of ability Pitino had in developing players, but obviously he isn't on Pitino's level.

The ACC will expose you pretty quick and you have to be a great recruiting in this league. The best hire they could have made given the circumstances.

I suppose you'd rather I go all in against him. And, no need to be overly dramatic. Our situation isn't in the same realm as murder. Come on, man.

I don’t see where there was equivocation with murder, simply that Pitino and his lack of oversight have helped create the worst b-ball scandal SINCE that Baylor situation.

If you wish, but the two pale in comparison.

Haters like pig and knucklehead don't want you to treat Mack--or Tyra--fairly. They want you to lower their bar all the way to the ground because of the horrific, catastrophic, unprecedented, mind-blowing (insert additional superlatives) situation each was brought into.

And couched in that is their unreasonable paranoia that one of these guys might fail. Odd for their apologists to feel that way...

Says the guy who very early on called Tyra a “scumbag” and “liar” intermingled with some pretty hideous memes. You’ve already stated that you are fine if they fail because you want to look “right” for your internet friends.

You always get confused or do that to yourself... :p

"Scumbag" is a personal insult--with graphics to match--that have little to do with one's competency, likelihood of success, or even whether I predict it. You can lie, cheat, and steal your way to the top, but you're still at the top. Suffice to say, I may also point out how you got there.

And to put my remarks in context once again because you lose track... "I'm fine" watching people get what they deserve, good or bad. In fact, I want to see that as some form of justice in life. If Mack tries hard and should do well, I don't wanna see factors beyond his control become his undoing. On the flipside, if he's just a good coach but not great, I'm not lowering my standards because he's at U of L or I like him. Esp. considering what he's paid. Those factors are irrelevant.

Thanks for asking again, and I'll keep trying to help you. I'm almost expecting that with a knucklehead...

Impressive verbal diarrhea post. You are a Mack hater and Tyra hater. There is no bar lowering. A small few like you discount the damage done by Pitino and his mismanagement because you are so desirous of failure of Mack and by extension Tyra. The original post was from an NBA scout and your knee-jerk reaction is to crap on it. It must be tiresome to constantly look to discredit our new athletic dept. I’m surprised you have enough time to make your ridiculous memes.

Since Fist didn't add his own commentary to the OP, the reader is left to his devices to interpret the OP's intent. Fist can speak for himself, but I'm assuming he posted it as a tribute to Mack. That's certainly what the anonymous NBA scout was trying to accomplish.

And as in most discussions, there is point and counterpoint. Excuse me for providing what was missing in the OP even if it went against your usual clown show agenda. And I'll do it each time I see it--count on that.

Next time you go to the YUM, look up in the rafters and see if you see anything missing, and then go into the museum and see if you see a trophy missing. There is your evidence.
Evidence of what? These guys?

And find me claims of "lying, cheating, and stealing" in the NCAA report directly linked to Ramsey, Jurich, and Pitino. Take your time...

In all your vast attempts at revisionist history, blaming the banners coming down on the new administration might be your most impressive work of fiction. Well done Zipp, well done!

You remind me of when I was a boy and I first found out Santa wasnt real. No matter what anyone told me or any evidence that was presented, I didnt want to believe it. I went on for years continuing to try and rationalize and believe in something that wasnt real. I hope it doesnt take you that long.

Those banners would still be hanging from the ceiling at 2nd & Main if Ramsey, Jurich, and Pitino were in their jobs. And the national championship mural would still be hanging in the lobby for drivers driving by to see everyday. Your guys didn't care about them or the fans, and willfully removed them.

That's all the evidence I need on that particular topic...

Would this fall under comedy writing or just pure irony? Either way, nice work again Zipp! It’s nice to have a good laugh before going to bed.

It's also why the FANS have to step up and file suit over the banners--ill advised or not--when your clown show fails to deliver.

What's Pitino's new label for them?..."Board of Traitors"

LOL!
