For Auburn fans who want to know something about Cards players. Let’s use Rivals recruiting rankings.

Now the depth chart is not known yet but it's a good guess who the top two units will be. So here we go.

QB Three 3 star recruits.
RB Three 3 star recruits.
TE Two 3 star
WR Two 4 star Three 3 star
OL Five 3 star Two 2 star
DL Six 3 star
LB Five 4 star Two 3 star
DB One 5 star One 4 star Four 3 star One 2 star

Now we all know recruiting rankings don't mean a lot until these players play. However, most times the higher ranked players end up being a teams best players.

Louisville is loaded on defense and at WR and RB. It's up to QB and the OL. Petrino has a 4 star true frosh this season at QB and two more 4 star QB committed for next season.

Any time now the Louisville Cardinals are going to be a serious contender for the playoff.

I think a lot of games are typically decided by such a close margin that, it's really hard to pinpoint just a few keys to a team's season. For example, the first thing you said is it's up to QB and the OL. Last year we had poor play out of both in stretches, yet still won 9 games. Not picking on that point of view because most everybody agrees w/ that.

I just think it comes down to so many variables, including luck, which nobody can truly predict.

If our season is going to be as you hope, or close to it - I will circle the Clemson game. Got to have that one to have any chance at a big season. It would be a big W to get, on National TV, with an audience all to our own for the Thursday night game.

I think we replace too much to be where you got us but I'd love to roll back here in a few months and say I was wrong.

I really don't know anything.

Can't really support this line of thinking, if you are using our recruiting to predict a run for the national playoff in the near future. There are just too many teams with consistently superior recruiting to make such a prediction. Where we have mostly 3 and a few 4 star recruits in the program, some teams have 4 and 5 star recruits starting, with some 4 and 5 star recruits on the depth chart. We are recruiting better than we have historically at UofL, but we are not consistently recruiting anywhere near the historically top programs at this point. Not saying we can't or won't make a run, but to predict it based on our recruiting doesn't seem logical to me.

Agree with your take Steelers

Well, didn't really predict a playoff this year. The basis of my post was to inform the many Auburn fans what kind of talent the current Cards program has. And to point out how everything is set for the program to reach higher levels in the near future in recruiting and winning.

Of course if the program continues to receive just a few 4 star recruits with the bulk being 3 star guys then being a perinnal playoff contender would not likely occur. Seems like plenty of logic in that.

Over on the premium board I'm notorious for being really skeptical of the star rating system for football; basketball is easier because you have such a lengthy period of head-to-head matchups with highly rated players via AAU tournies, all star games and in high school basketball games and beyond that a kid's height and frame is closer to finished product than say a kid who is a down lineman in HS. You don't have that in football and I'd politely say that a kid's star rating has a whole lot more to do with where a kid commits or has interest from--and more cynically, the impact of a teaser to high premium subscribing fanbases--than any one evaluation method. What makes you plump down $9 a month...the headline that reads "4 star has Louisville in the lead" or "3 star looking to take an official visit?"

My Exhibits A through D are...how many 4 star ex-Tennessee players have we had transfer to Louisville or rumored to be? Jerod Hayden, Leland Taylor, Matt Milton...now Alphonso Carter. There are some other examples...and I swear there hasn't been a one with the exception of Leland Taylor who was worth a hill of dung in the last twenty years. But you're going to have exponentially more recruiting obsessed Tennesseans than you are the same with the Louisville fanbase...it almost has more to do with targeted marketing than true talent evaluation.

This leaves out Montrell Jones who was a Tennessee player who transferred back to the Ville. Probably the exception that proves the rule. And, it was a long time ago. I agree entirely that football star rankings are an inch deep and not even a mile wide (as many many players go unevaluated until they sign and then get the 2- 3- or 4- star treatment varying on where they signed).

Not necessarily. It just means that the bulk of our recruits probably won't contribute until year 2-3. The four star recruits see the field in year 1. If the coaches manage the roster carefully, our talent can compete with the best, provided they've had a year or two to develop. The issue is depth. The elite programs have four and five star recruits in depth, and they are for the most part ready to go. Our three stars in depth are still developing. So, we have to stay healthy to make a CFP run, Alabama doesn't.

Petrino has never recruited a football player based on his star rating, he recruits players that fit his system. When he was here the first time all the talk shows always said Petrino was one of the best coaches analyzing talent, a two star who could play in his system was better than a 5 star who couldn't.

Koz, I think you are right about CBP getting his type of athlete to plug into his system! He also is not afraid to go get JUCO's!
