University of Louisville women's basketball opens the 2022 NCAA Tournament against 16-seed UAlbany (23-9) on Friday night at 6 p.m. ET at the KFC Yum! Center.

After winning their first America East title since 2017, Albany comes in to the NCAA Tournament with a 23-9 overall record, 13-5 in league play. The Great Danes defeated New Hampshire and Vermont before upsetting first-seed Maine to win the America East title.

Albany put five players on the America East postseason honors list. Morgan Haney was named the America East Sixth Player of the Year. Helene Haegerstrand and Kayla Cooper were named to the First and Second Team, respectively. Lucia Decortes earned All-Defensive Team honors and Lilly Phillips earned an All-Rookie Team nod. Haegerstrand leads the team in scoring with 12.1 points per game and has made 56 3-pointers, while shooting 39 percent from deep. Cooper is the other double-digit scorer with 11.1 points, while leading the team with 7.2 rebounds per game.

The Great Danes are the second-best scoring defense in the country, allowing 48.6 points per game. They limit opponents to 36.3 percent shooting, which led the America East and ranks 32nd in the NCAA.

The Cardinals are 12-2 all-time in NCAA Tournament games at the KFC Yum! Center and 6-0 in first round games at home.

Gonzaga and Nebraska will play in the opening game of the day in the KFC YUM! Center at 3:30 pm.

I read an article on Her Hoops and they said if a number one seed gets upset the odds are it will be Louisville. I don’t know if they are basing it on the toughness of our region or the 2 games we lost after having commanding leads.

I was wondering the same thing they are saying New Albany I think they are confused. K. Smith is on fire in the first period she has 8 or 10 points. We got stuck on 19 points let’s keep it going in the 2nd period.

Both announcers are calling the Cards opponent “NEW “ Albany.
Did they eat at Kingfish across the River before the game and get confused.

somebody save those announcers

I was thinking the same thing I hope we have a whole lot bigger crowd the next game. Being a better opponent on a Sunday we should have a really good crowd.

As far as the game. Kiana came out firing on all cylinders. And Emily never ceases to amaze me. She so athletic and aggressive. Wish she was her for several more years.
Passes were crisp and the D was off the chart. Initially UAlbany was shocked by our D and the D was relentless.

The word from UAlbany's Sports Information Director, whom I had the pleasure of meeting Thursday is that the athletic program, coaches and players prefer U Albany instead of just plain Albany. I DID mention to him that it did sound like New Albany but she was unfamiliar with the scenic southern Indiana city.

I suggested she try The Exchange in New Albany for dining while here, she chuckled and said she doubted they would be here after Saturday morning unless "an amazing miracle" took place. Nice lady, and she also mentioned that they were sometimes referred to as University at Albany. Thy are a part of The State of New York university system. They have abot 17,000 students.

She also mentioned that Steve Guttenberg (Police Academy movies, Three Men and a Baby) attended UAlbany. I told her that Tom Cruise lived in Louisville for awhile. she was unimpressed...but she liked Jennifer Lawrence,

The Lady Zags are a very real threat to our advancing to Wichita. This will be a chance for Olivia to really step up; she needs to keep 6’5” Virjoghe off the offensive boards and Emily will have most of the responsibility for keeping Kempton from taking over for the Zags. I like our ability to do both.

Our guards play leaves them in the dirt and this one won't be close.

Aside from our most impressive 14-0 start, this came was very close. This Zag team exemplifies just how dangerous a well- coached unit is in a tournament environment. Those Zag ladies were not as talented, or as athletic as ours, which explained their 18 turnovers against our stifling defensive pressure. However, their rebounding advantage allowed them to keep it as close as they did, as their offensive spacing and positioning underneath was an indication of good discipline.

IU vs Princeton will be entertaining.
