Cam Ward On UofL Defense

Brohm is definitely pissed about the defense but does he have any real options to fix it.... and I do agree with Zipp, which I often don't when he talks about U of L politics and Ricky P, our OL needs to get better as well. Miami gave up a lot of points to California 38 and VT 34 so our numbers could be deceiving.

At Louisville you can’t be vanilla on defense. If you are going to be vanilla you better be extremely disciplined. They aren’t the vanilla and running around lost.

The reality is the line transfers aren’t from major conferences. It shows. Big bodies but not disrupters. In college if you can’t get the QB off his 1st read have fun. This is the 2nd QB saying they know what they are getting. It manageable in the Big Ten West because they were all run heavy offenses. We have 2 years of data good offenses crave up this defense.

Ward also said...."“We got one of the best O-lines, one of the best receiving corps, got a great OC," Ward said, referring to offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson. "All I do is put the ball in play. You see today I’m throwing to wide-open people and they make contested catches when they need to."

Idk what politics has to do with anything? Maybe explain that better but we have the 22nd rated QB in the nation, Top 10 in yards and TD’s, we have a very good running back which all interprets to a good offense. The problem with English is he’s caught up in this speed thing. He wants fast linebackers, safety’s regardless if they can tackle at the POC. Actually 75% of the time our linebackers are out of position and get caught up in the wash which makes them ineffective. No matter how much you try to change the game you have to have prototypical linebackers who are physical enough to fight off blocks and finish tackles. Same for safeties. Either English changes his beliefs or he needs to be sent packing.

Thor had an excellent game if PFF scores are to be believed.

I can only go by how Miami pushed the front around. Again it is a really good line. Thor may of met some metrics but overall that unit wasn’t great. Outside the 2 sacks they had zero tackles for loss. That tells me Miami always identified their blocks and Louisville couldn’t disrupt what they were doing.

LB's without question are the worst unit on the field. They can't cover a seam route and run themselves out of the play then can't tackle if they do manage to be in the right gap.
Agree Dan, but in all fairness, those of us familiar with this UL football roster knew this position was a weakness coming into the 2024 season.

I don't know if that's much of an excuse seven games into the season for how truly awful they are. At some point they've got be coached on reading the play being in the correct gaps wrapping up and bringing down the ball carrier.

In rewatching the game, Miami's OL was able to push our DL into the 2nd level and our LBs and DBs having to make plays. Miami basically ran up the middle, nothing fancy, no misdirection plays and our defense was unable to stop them. That's as uncomplicated scheme that was successful over and over. Without some type of adjustments, that doesn't bode well against teams like BC, Pitt and well, you know who.

I think there is little hope of winning at Clemson. The season is going to come down to the Kentucky game and if we get owned by them again I fear it's going to get ugly sooner than later.

Regrettably, this UK roster is very talented and will be a huge challenge for us. Their record is misleading and a result of some incredibly poor performances against two teams (SC and Vandy) who turn out to be a lot better than anyone could have expected.

If we beat the cats this year; all will be forgotten about earlier disappointments

It’s the corners covering those skinny post routes we keep getting burned on not the LB’s, but I agree the LB’s are too small and their speed doesn’t help them fight through blocks and make tackles. Our other big problem is safety’s and corner’s who can’t make a solo tackle. They try to hit high and get knocked off the tackle. They need to hit low with their heads up but that takes giving up your body.

If we can’t beat them this year we’re pathetic. They have no offense whatsoever.

Actually I think the big problem with most young players today is that they don’t wrap up. Stronger runners just bounce off and keep chugging.

Hard to wrap up what you can’t get your arms around, the shoulder pads. Sometimes it hurts to have to hit low and wrap up the legs but how bad do you want to win?
