John Calipari says Harrisons stayed in semifinal loss out of loyalty

LOS ANGELES — Coach John Calipari said his loyalty to guards Andrew and Aaron Harrison last season may have cost Kentucky a shot at the national championship and a 40-0 record.

Speaking at a basketball coaches clinic on Sunday, Calipari noted he stuck with the Harrison twins, then sophomores, rather than play Devin Booker and Tyler Ulis, then freshmen, when Kentucky faltered down the the stretch against Wisconsin in the semifinal game of the 2015 Final Four.
“Now you may say, ‘Why didn’t you have Tyler and Devin in at the end of the Wisconsin game? You probably would have won,’ ’’ Calipari said during his hour-long talk. “Because I was being loyal to those other two who led us to a championship game a year ago and they deserve to be on that court. That’s why I did it. I knew who was playing well and who was struggling. You think I wasn’t sitting there watching?

“But I owed it to those two (the Harrison twins) to do it.’’

Kentucky went ahead 58-56 on Aaron Harrison’s layup with 7:51 to play. But the Harrisons missed seven of their final eight shots from the floor as Wisconsin pulled away for a 71-64 victory that ended Kentucky’s season at 38-1.

The Harrisons, who both started the game, combined for 10-of-21 shooting from the floor, 4-for-4 from the free throw line and had one steal and one turnover. Booker and Ulis, who were on the court about half as long as the Harrison twins, combined for 5-of-10 shooting from the floor, shot no free throws and had two steals and no turnovers.

So now it wasn't his coaching that was the reason for losing to Wisconsin, even though it was his decision to play the Harrison twins.....un-huh. Go back at look at how many minutes Booker and Ulis played in that game....what were their stats ? LOL
So it's everybody else fault but coach "used car salesman cal" for the loss, cal has no integrity or character. Fact is he is a "Character" from the Batman comics.......the Joker !!

Wow now that's the definition of lack of integrity.
Cal had to uphold the playing time of these two per their agreement:oops:

Yeah, because it's all about the kids and loyalty! Squid knew that putting in Booker and Ulis would have led to a National Title but dammit what's a sentimental 8 legged flim-flam man to do?

In the words of Clark Griswold "Jeez, what a worm".

"Hey coach Robic, should I call a timeout?"

They were posed' to be one and done anyways.

Cow couldn't coach the 88' Lakers to the title, if you spotted him a 3-0
to nothing lead.

He believes getting players to the NBA, is greater than winning the Title.

His coaching, or lack thereof, is glaringly appearant.

Stay 10 more years cow. Unless the hammer is about to drop........

We all new this. He loves his players. If he really wanted to win the National Championship he would have pulled out his wallet, I mean the right levers.

That's what a narcissist does. A narcissist will always be perfect and if something does goes bad, it's somebody else who's at fault, or the reason the "better" path was taken is because the narcissist's way was better no matter the outcome and the rest of the world that isn't perfect can't possibly understand. John Calipari is a full blown narcissist.

Someone else's fault? HIS fault for not putting the right players in at the right time. I don't read this as the Harrisons cost UK the game. I read it as Cal ADMITTING he did not put the best weapons on the floor at the right time. Ergo, this was a COACHING failure, not a players failure. There's no bus throwing here.

If Cal does not admin fault, he's wrong. If he does admit fault, he's wrong.

He's a ego maniac. You read he takes blame for not taking out the twins, and the truth is he's making an excuse for losing by saying it in the first place. Haters are gonna hate but it's because of BS like this. He MUST be the center of ALL attention ALL the time. How about just admitting Wisconsin was a better COACHED team and let it go? He can't do that. He only knows how to deflect as he defends. This time he deflected by saying in a round about way the twins cost HIM the national championship because of HIS loyalty to them. What a total crock of crap.

Everything that flies out of this DBs mouth is aimed at the next crop of recruits out there.

In other words, of course we could have won a National Title but my undying loyalty to my 2 older players was more important than any trophy.

And by the way, I was well aware of who gave us a better chance to take down Wisconsin late but I chose to walk the ball up court and drain the shot clock with my 2 favorite sons.

What's lost in all this is as Cue said with all this whining and 2nd guessing he still refuses to show any class and just congratulate Wisconsin for being the better team and move on.

Why not trust the 2 guys who got you to the title game last year? Aaron is absolutely the guy I want late in big game situations.

It seems like this is taken out of context, but was he saying the Harrison's were struggling but he kept them in the game? Stat lines certainly wouldn't suggest that like another poster mentioned.

Not sure why he's even still making comments about it at all.It was a final four game 6 months ago.Coaches do questionable things all the time.

Exactly. We all know WHY though. It's because of who HE is. He can't help get out of his own way.

He's going to answer every question about last season in a way that does not tarnish his reputation as a coach and in a way that appeals to the next group of recruits. He's thrown other players under the bus before after they've moved on, there's a list by the way. There is no other logic to this except that he is pandering to the audience(mostly himself) and waving around every excuse he can to deflect from the fact that he's not a good coach and blew that game.

As far as him ever giving Wisconson credit.....yeah that ain't happening. He hasn't in 6 months and his narcisistic mind won't allow it. If you ever here "Good game Wisconson" come out of his mouth he'd probably suffer an aneurism and die on the spot. I'd imagine springs and cogs popping out of his ears and old cassette tape rolling out of his mouth.

I assume this is why LPT has one title with thirty 5-star kids the last five years.

At least Pitino Lite's giving the courier some "great runs".

"Elite program", my a$$...

Cal is and always has taken responsibility for games and wins a losses. no different here. Just the haters gonna hate mentality is all.

I think this is the year that the Cats win their first 39 games and right before the Championship game Rex Chapman gets drunk and tweets out that Coach Cal has agreed to replace the retiring Coach K at Duke next year.

Sure he takes responsibility. He just says that other things like the NBA and picking which players deserve more playing time are more important than wins and losses.

Or championships.

Blue Power Cat, I don' t watch sUcK play any sport unless they are playing UL. I don't listen to their talk shows either so I can't dispute your claim. However when Cal was at Memphis he never took the blame for a loss it was always the players fault. He must have changed a lot since he moved to Lessington.

The only thing about UK is to beat them. It's sad how much head space some UL "fans" let UK occupy. Grow a set!
Aren't you the one who manages to turn every thread into a measuring stick against UK? I'd say that's occupying some head space.
