Anas gets too much time

Anas is 7 foot whatever and can't/won't dunk it - too much laying it in around the goal and many of those just roll off the rim instead of going through the bucket. It's painful to watch. Also when he doesn't go up strong, he doesn't get the foul called. Really just a very poor "big" man still. For all his "touch", he just doesn't get many of those lay ins to go down.

That said, our bigs are very underwhelming in general. It's disappointing that we don't have a better alternative.

Johnson didn't play well last night. Thought Mango played pretty well.

Levitch gets too much time. Those are minutes VJ should get for developing real game experience.

Anas is different than any big we've had here for a while.According to CP,he has the best post moves of all our bigs and i think this is true.On the other hand, those post moves don't translate into baskets, because of his weight. He is not big and strong enough to go thru people.

I don't know where this puts him, because he's a really good passer, which we lack, and our best back line defender. He's gonna play, but the post might not be where he ends up.I actually would expect to see him in more withJJ or Mahmoud, playing the 4.

I would prefer him to take 1 or 2 more dribbles(with his handles) and dunk the ball or just pull up.His shots are starting 4-6 feet from the rim.

King isn't playing because he's not confident. This is the first time in his young life where he's faced real adversity on the basketball court. He has to work his way through it or he will be Pitino's latest transfer.

These kids today think they have it figured out and when they realize that they really don't, it's how they react that will move them in a positive or negative direction. Mitchell is a good case as he learned last year that he wasn't as ready as he believed but since he's got such a good attitude he has become the best player on the team. Hopefully VJ will be like this and not another Shaquan Aaron.

totally agree. but players gain confidence by playing. i know he needs to earn it, but there just seem to be situations where he could play and doesn't get the chance.

Not true. It's practice where a player gets his confidence. Since we are not at practice we can't see how King has regressed since he got here and how it's effecting him. By Pitino not giving him more minutes we can only surmise that he's not practicing well.

I like what Mahmoud brings to this team. Right now, and depending on the situation, Anas is not enough by himself. There will be teams and situations where we need Mangok's strength and rebounding. I think Anas needs to get more PT than Mangok though as he is just better and more versatile in many ways.

However if I never see that damn foul line finger roll from Anas again I'll be alright. lol

You can ruin a player by exposing him to repeated failures on the court. Until King relaxes with his knowledge of the speed and athleticism he's facing, he will remain mental. He passed up 3's the other night. For him, that's bad. He's supposed to take those shots.

CRP gives VJ King the minutes David Levitch got last night we lose. VJ will be an excellent player but as previous posters have stated you gain confidence in practice not in the fire of battle. VJ isn't even close on defense he was out of position at least twice last night and they hit two 3's because of it. Plus Levitch really distributes the ball well and he hits 3's. Very impressed with his progress over the years.

So yeah anyway the reality is the entire team is inconsistent and Pitino is never going to know "who" is going to have their "A game" on most nights, so it's just not so easy to have rotations and hand out the playing time in a structured way. All the big men are foul prone, they are all going to play roughly the same minutes when we look back at the season at the end of the year.

The coach is defensive minded so pretty much everybody is going to look awful out there offensively at times, some more than others.

Mahmoud is obviously a unique player. He's currently 16th in the country in blocked shots, and the OP does not want him to play as much as he is playing.

What is really funny is, out of those Top 16 shot blockers, Mahmoud is getting the least amount of playing time.

So really, the argument should be, Mahmoud should play more, not less. But the reality with that point of view is, he can't, because he's foul prone. The guy is in the T5 in the country for blocks per 40 minutes. He's a complete game changer. He alters shots, he blocks shots, and my favorite part of the game is when an opposing player takes the challenge of trying to score on him to a point of hogging the ball and not running any offense.... just because he's so tall and they want to put him on a Sports Center poster, as if that's a good strategy.

I hope Rick plays the lineup everybody wants Saturday, whatever the hell that lineup might be.

Here are our per-game stats for Mahmoud and Mathiang combined:

Minutes played 38.7
Points 11.2
Rebounds 9.8
Blocks 3.8
Assists 1.7
TOs 2.5

I don't really consider averaging a double-double (points and rebounds) with four blocks per game that underwhelming from the pivot position. Esp. considering the rating of the talent at that position...

His length and timing blocking shots are enough to merit his playing time. Even if he doesn't score another basket it's always good to have a rim protector anchoring down a defense

I would rather see Anas than see mango.
Anas is all hustle. He needs to stop the 1 foot floater, but since none of our bigs dunk its on rick mindgames to make them dunk.

Vj needs minutes. Especially if we want langford.

I am looking forward to what gameplan rick mindgames has tomorrow.

I hope in that gameplan is a lot of Anas, Spalding, King, adel and Snider

Id be happy if these five got the lions share of minutes.

I am not the coach and i am not happy with the mind games and criptic lineups.

Setting up for a very short season because rick mindgames refuses to play talent.

Well I see the coaches on this board are coming out of the woodwork. Question: how much do you make from UofL to coach men's basketball? Yes, we are all entitled to our opinion but some of you are simply over the top.

Lets just say one of the coaches is making great money betting against the pitino mindgame cards.

As long as mango gets more than 15 minutes a game, we will not cover and will come close to losing. I will continue to bet it until coach puts mango on the bench.

You take the good with the bad with Anas. The good is he is an excellent weak side defender, he passes well, and although he doesn't shoot it near enough, he has a nice 12 foot jump shot.

The bad is on offense he makes himself small by bringing the ball down to the guard level. He doesn't play above the rim like he could and should. This can be fixed, but he has to listen to his coaches.

IMO, the good right now outweighs the bad. He needs clock. We need him to play 7 foot tall.

Playing King more minutes because Romeo is watching is the most ludicrous blackmail I have seem, lol. Playing VJ because he earns his minutes would be inarguable. He needs to buckle down, Romeo don't give a crap about someone not performing.

The combination of Anas and Ray has the promise of one of the best 1-2 punches underneath we've ever had. Inasmuch as we have scorers whose recognized job is to put the ball into the basket, whatever we get from these guys offensively is simply gravy. As pointed out above, the 5 is averaging a double double - -so someone should be extremely happy.

But the true positive upshot is this: They've only been starting a few games. They are barely into finding out how they compare to others at game speed. The fact that we are winning and that they show obvious signs of improvement every testifies to why Pitino is so high in them. Neither Ray nor Anas has remotely touched their ceiling but they are getting closer as we watch the season take shape. If you aren't high in these guys, I don't have any idea of what sport you should comment on.

Louisville is 12-5 against the spread. That's an impressive record. I'm not sure how that translates to you making money betting against the pitino mindgame cards.

I see improvement in Anas' game almost daily. I get that Rick sees it that way also. He IS our best big man and he will get better.

Anas just needs a little weight and he will be a lottery pick.

Needs to improve his foul shooting because he's going to the line a lot.

Just got back from the game, not a rock, per se... I happily retract everything I said about Anas and freely admit to the board that I can be a grumpy a$$hole and was 100% wrong. Apologies to Anas. If you do read this board, please accept my apologies. You were a man today. Great win. GO CARDS!

You were posed to say it was a reverse jinx to get Anas his career high.

Until he plays poorly again next game right? Then you'll be calling for his head.
