My thoughts:
HVL took a lot of extremely difficult shots. She did use her screens properly...
We missed a lot of shots.. with all things considering the 38 shots taken by Car and HVL.
Also, I really feel like CJW should have adjusted and ran more ISO's for HVL...
Our bigs were Serviceable....and did their job...
Refs called a A TON of Fouls on us... at bad times...
VT really controlled the game and honestly, it felt like how we used to lose to Notre Dame all of those years in the Big East and ACC... They didn't dominate us... but controlled us.
I hate Amour... but I also respect her. Shes very spunky... and she dominates the game more so than the littler guard for NC State last year... these little 5'6" guards make shots when they are not supposed to... and it ticks me off greatly... She was literally the best guard on the floor...
Felt Sorry for Kasa... really feel like she needed to take more shots...
The killer quarter for us was the 2nd quarter. We got open shots and layups... we just missed...
One thing I watch is how players shoot. CC creates a rhythm for her self... with crossover and then shoot. I watched several of the VT players do the same (Amour, Kitley, Sole, and Taylor). Kitley just literally does a dribble and shoot or dribble and turn... and then they make them. HVL... she is VERY disjointed... She really NEEDS to do something to establish a rhythmm, but she doesnt. She puts too much confidence in her "take 1 dribble and shoot" motion, because its like she is trying to find her mark... If she finds it, like she did in game 1 of the tournament... then shes deadly. But think about it... How often has she found that mark in the last 10 games... not often.. because, GUESS WHAT? Anyy coach, who is worth his salt in coaching would teach his players to fight the screen and get a hand in her face or in her lap, to get in her "kitchen" to disrupt that. This means she is BARELY aiming at the rim when she shots that shot, because she has been disrupted.
Even Cochran with her fades creates her own space and rhythm.
So because she is disrupted, and doesn't use her screens properlyt, ORRRR, she ran her screens into Kittley,m what we saw was, with HVL, was that she would get the ball dribble against her own screen, dribble around, probing... screwing around (much like Ellis on the men's team) and then would take exceedingly terribly difficult shots.. that were almost nowhere near the mark, with the expectation that that refs would bail her out...
It makes for bad offense. Seriously bad offense.
In contrast, you have a player like Konno... who was open or made space for herself on the elbow gaps, but refused to shoot. And because She does not shoot enough it creates issues because that cowardly way of playing basketball makes her easy to guard.. She comes in and takes 2 or 3 dribbles and her reaction is as if she doesn't have ANY confidence, in her shot or ball handling... or her own athleticism.. despite being tall and long enough to affect the game... it sucks... she passes the ball up and wastes time on the floor.
But HER polar opposite is Jones... a player who does not mesh well on defense or offense... which is why she and CC frustrate Jeff sooo much. We got an ALL ACC player on defense and offense in Jones... but its because she does a lot of free wheeling on her own, on both sides of the floor. She is not a good passer... and she gets lost in zones and man to man... make her the focal point of the offense, or grant her a green light on offense and the ability to roam the floor on defense she becomes almost like an elite player. But the caveat is that you need good length and athleticm to cover up for her mistakes on both ends of the floor... Jeff plays her... but has to pull her after a while because of he lack of cocentration and instincts. She looks all ACC as long as everything you do is fast break and helter skelter in the half court on both sides of the ball.
CC is about the same... its just she is trapped in a small body. She is Russ Smith re-incarnated... without the paint game. Her offense is based off of jukes and her creating just enough space to pull the trigger. She at least follows some of CJW's defensive game plan. On offense... mannn, she hunts her shot... and does not know how to create for others... which, Jeff finally gave up on trying to make her a PG.Put some length on her and she struggles like HVL... on defense...
She also, like the others can be lulled to sleep on step back 3's and in the lane curl jumpers. This is something that coaches fail to teach at times... is making sure, like VT did to HVL today, to disrupt a scorers rhythm. Its very FRUSTRATING to watch a player like Amour, Kittley, Sole, or Taylor hit step back jumpers. You could HEAR the crowd chanting the count down on the shot clock. Which meant, ANY one who is ANYONE should know the shot was coming... At that point you had some choices... GET IN THAT GUARDS KITCHEN... don't let them process and then get into a shooting rhythm to take a step-back 3-pointers... IT SUCKS... Amour is VERY fast... but shucks face her up, make her dribble through YOU on screens... not around you... which means Jumping in front her her... but certainly don't play under the screen... step in... and the big who is guarding her NEEDED to step through also... It just seemed like we lost her on a lot of screens and PNR's... but then again... her genius is that she made floaters... something HVL.. did not do in this game... most of HER shots were fading away or to the side...
Tough game to lose... and, as I noted before.. depending on our seeding... probably a 5th seed... who won't make it past 2nd round or Sweet 16... Girls did focus, in this tournament, more so than I have seen them do all season long. The last 12 games with Kasa as starting PG... we have been a top 25, top 15 team...
Jeff just needed to draw up some double elevators for his shooters, OR he just needed to draw up some ISO's to get HVL screened into Amour, or by her self against Taylor. INstead , HVL would get the ball, pause and then dribble so much the clock would wind down and she would take crazy hard shots... hoping to get the foul call.
I will say this... we didn't lose focus and have a lot of the dumb turnovers we have had all season long... You know, the spates where we would just turn the ball over, during crucial periods... in BUNCHES... HVL had a bad one.. but again... this is because VT scouted her really good. So by vthe middle of the 2 quarter, you had HVL "Flinching" and not taking the open shots... because she was expecting someone to block her shot... which almost never happened.
1 other small observation... VT is a good team... but I really don't think they get past the Sweet 16 or Elite 8. Kittley is basically a billboard on the floor. 6'6" she just has to stand tall.. and she doesn't have as many post moves as Kuhnane had last year..,, for NC State. As whole, the team has skill and can shootm but they don't have a lot of athleticism. Call me a hater... but I just aint sold on them yet.
