League Notes
Florida State was the only team to record a three-game series sweep as ACC teams opened conference play over the weekend. Atlantic Division members Louisville, NC State and Wake Forest joined FSU as series winners. Coastal Division members Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Virginia also took two of three from their respective opponents.
Louisville clinched its first-ever series as an ACC member in dramatic fashion, as freshman Brendan McKay worked two shutout innings of relief before delivering a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to lift the 19th-ranked Cardinals to a 5-4 victory over No. 15 Miami in Sunday's third game. Louisville ended the Hurricanes' streak of seven straight series wins in the ACC.
Wake Forest's six home runs in Sunday's win over visiting Virginia Tech - including two by ACC Player of the Week Will Craig, who registered an ACC season-high 10 total bases - were an ACC team high for the 2015 season thus far. NC State, meanwhile, turned six double plays inSunday's win over visiting Clemson, setting a school record and tying an ACC mark. The Wolfpack fell one double play shy of tying an NCAA record.
Pitt's T.J. Zeuch earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors after striking out eight batters, allowing four hits and no walks in eight shutout innings in a 1-0 win over top-ranked Virginia. He outdueled Cavalier counterpart Nathan Kirby, whose 13 strikeouts were a single-game high by an ACC pitcher this season.
No. 17 Florida State is set to put a nine-game winning streak on the line when it plays host to No. 12 UCF in a pair of midweek games. Another midweek non-conference matchup of interest finds NC State hitting the road on Wednesday to face No. 22 Florida Atlantic.
Tracking the New Ball: With the new ball in play in collegiate baseball this year, scoring and home run rates will continue to be a major story line throughout the season. Through the first weekend of conference play (201 games in 2015 vs. 199 games in 2014), ACC teams are producing 63.7% more home runs and 12.8% more runs per game.
