League Notes
The final full weekend of nonconference play saw ACC teams post a 36-9 record against outside opposition. Highlights included Clemson's series victory over No. 5 South Carolina on Friday night and unbeaten weekends by third-ranked Virginia, Florida State, Duke, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame and Wake Forest.
ACC wins included three 1-0 victories - Georgia Tech over Indiana State on Friday and two Saturday games that went extra innings - Duke over Rider in 11 innings and Virginia Tech over Toledo in 10. ACC teams posted a total of five shutout victories over the weekend.
Top pitching performances included Clemson's Brody Koerner throwing a complete game shutout on the road against South Carolina to clinch the series. He allowed just four hits and struck out seven en route to becoming the first Tiger to throw a complete game shutout in Columbia since 1968.
Sophomore Brandon Gold of Georgia Tech made his first career start and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of the Yellow Jackets' 7-1 win over Indiana State. He wound up allowing one hit and walk in a seven-inning scoreless stint.
Though he didn't get the decision, Duke starter Andrew Istler delivered a stellar start in the shutout of Rider, working seven innings and allowing just four hits while striking out six and walking none. North Carolina's Benton Moss also tossed seven, walk-free innings in a 4-3 win over Rhode Island while allowing six hits and striking out 10.
The Virginia Tech-Toledo game saw Aaron McGarity become the first Hokies starter since May 1, 2011, to work nine innings without allowing run. He allowed five hits while walking one and striking out eight. Wake Forest sophomore Parker Dunshee faced the minimum 21 batters in seven shutout innings in a 7-0 win over Towson, allowing no hits and walking none while striking out nine.
And out of the bullpen, Florida State closer Billy Strode pieced together an amazing week with four saves in the Seminoles' win over Jacksonville and series sweep of UNC Wilmington. Strode allowed just three hits and one walk in 3.2 scoreless innings while walking one batter and striking out 10. Louisville's Brenda McKay had three saves in three chances, allowing two hits and striking out eight in 3.0 innings. He also hit .500 with four RBIs in 12 at-bats.
Impressive offensive performances included a big night at the plate by Clemson sophomore Weston Wilson in the Friday win over South Carolina. Wilson homered twice and drove in four runs against the Gamecocks, following up on his home run and three RBIs in a win over Wofford two nights earlier.
Georgia Tech's A.J. Murray hit .471 for the week with two home runs and six RBIs. Notre Dame's Cavan Biggio continued his hot start by hitting .556 and slugging 1.333, including a pair of home runs in Saturday's 8-2 win over Mercer. Boston College's Donovan Casey hit .778 for the week (7-for-9), and Virginia's Pavin Smith also heated thing up a .692 (9-for-13). Wake Forest's Nate Mondou hit .500 for the week while driving in nine runs.
