Season ticket holders were emailed today about fund raising efforts. Here's the data in the email...

Walz said previously that he needs around a half million annually to consistently field Final Four caliber teams. Half that gets him to the Sweet 16 in many years, i.e., hosting first round games and through the first weekend.

His NIL guys have been working at this for several months as aggressively as any U of L sport I'm familiar with. They're obviously taking a grass roots approach. I suspect that the nonrevenue sports will have to take this approach for most of their money.

The money they're getting per donor is outstanding, but they're well short of their goals otherwise. I'm also guessing that now is a critical time to have these funds in hand. (Speaking of which, $30K of the 141K is committed but not received...)

Interesting; I guess it takes seeing a breakdown like this, before I can truly understand that on-court success is directly related to the $$$ contributions from the fan base in order to buy the players that it takes to win.

WOW, some disillusionment for me, as I finally get it ..... the end of amateur sports as I once knew it. College education has somehow become cheapened.

The issue with modern collegiate sports is that for a school like Louisville - there's only so much money to go around.

Asking/expecting working class fans to fund NIL collectives is already a shitty strategy IMO but there are obviously a chunk of fans who will fork over money and want to feel involved. However - there's only so many of those fans to go around and logic dictates that if you're a fan of UofL womens basketball you're likely a fan UofL mens basketball and football. It seems likely to me if that if you're the sort of fan that doesn't have hundreds of thousands to throw around but still enough that you want to donate and help that you're much, much more likely to donate to mens basketball or football than womens basketball. So I applaud UofL fans for even generating that amount of NIL money for womens basketball because I would assume that at a school like UofL that lacks an abundance of major millionaire/billionaire donors that it will be next to impossible to accumulate $500K-$1 million a year specifically for womens basketball.

I’m a huge FB fan and WBB but have lost all real interest in MBB.
Having said that I’m not donating any money for the 502 deal. Won’t be apart of it. Rather see college athletics crumble. I’ll continue for now and buy season tickets for FB and will this year for WBB not sure for how much longer. Just don’t like the system.

As long as Walz can keep the NIL prima donnas off his team, he’ll get my financial support.

No confidence at all that’s possible in men’s basketball…

Yeah college athletics is already massively expensive to be a fan of - I'm not forking over MORE money to collectives for us to buy players. The fans do their part if the programs are well managed and successful - they shouldn't also have to fund the players salaries.

College athletics is going to go through some major changes over the next decade. With the growing income gap between the Big 10/SEC and everyone else, the instability of conferences, the rise of the portal and the unsustainability of NIL.....It will be very interesting to see where college athletics ends up in a few years.
