Aimee Plumb goal with 10 seconds remaining in overtime gave the Louisville field Hockey squad a 3-2 win over North Carolina yesterday afternoon at Karen Shelton Stadium in Chapel Hill, NC.

The win improves Louisville record to 14-2 and 5-0 in ACC play. Beating UNC, coupled with a Syracuse 2-1 loss to Virginia has the Cards alone atop the ACC standings.

This one was a defensive struggle for three quarters and a wild fourth quarter with two ties and two lead changes. The first half was a battle between both squad's strong midfield players and some nice goalkeeping work from Cards goalkeeper Mila De Kuijer. The squads went to halftime scoreless.

North Carolina broke through first -- midway through the third quarter -- on a tap in from a shot deflection. The third quarter ended with the TarHeels holding that 1-0 edge.

Louisville received a penalty stroke opportunity just two minutes into the fourth quarter and sophomore Aimee Plumb fired a rocket past UNC goalkeeper Abigail Taylor to tie the match up.
The Cards would ride that momentum and respond again to grab a 2-1 lead off a penalty corner. Julie Kouijzer's shot was deflected by Taylor, but Mattie tabor was there to corral the block and send it into the goal.

That 2-1 lead looked like it might be safe as the fourth quarter continued, but UNC pulled their goalkeeper to put an extra offensive player on the pitch and that paid off for them with three minutes left in play when the TarHeels scored on a nice cross and pass in front of the Louisville goal.

Neither team converted in the final three minutes and bonus hockey was next.

The TarHeels threatened first in the 10-minute O.T. session, drawing two penalty corners, but the Cards defense denied both attempts. As the extra session reached mere seconds remaining, the Cards intercepted a TarHeel pass and got the ball to Plumb. She worked her way through three Carolina defenders and took a shot with 10 second to go. Her attempt was good and Louisville had pulled out the 3-2 win.

Cards head coach Justine Sowry was proud of the fight and saw the contest as an opportunity for learn as well:

"As you would expect, each team controlled the play at different times. We need to look at the video and take some strong lessons away as we head to the important phase of the season. With that being said, I am so proud of the fight that our players displayed against a formidable and well coached opponent. Our team refused to stop fighting!"

Louisville continues the road swing with a Sunday match at James Madison.
