Mayo's Musings from yesterday's cluster.....

One thing about the defense that I have no idea about is - what is their identity and frankly what kind of defense does Brohm want them to run? For instance when we had Lamar, we also had Todd Grantham as DC. Love him or hate him he ran a defense that complimented the offense. Petrino wanted the ball as much as possible so the very aggressive defense Grantham ran fit with what Petrino wanted. Yes we would get burned by his blitzes sometimes but it also created a defense that was a turnover making machine - Gerod Holliman led the nation in INTs. I have no idea what we are currently trying to achieve on defense. There is no identity. They have trouble getting the signals in. They don’t force turnovers. Three penalties overturned two turnovers and a stop on a two point conversion - any of which likely seals the game.

We give Jeff another year. That’s all.

Offensive playing calling is really based off production. Vegas implied score was 38-17 The offense produced 35 points. They didn’t produce when they really needed it.

Brown gets hurt but Watson is a stud. It really boils down to the passing game again is OK. Not awful not great.

Tyler is good but he is zero threat to run. When the other team covers he doesn’t even look to run. How many times does a running QB on 3-5 or 3-10 make a play with their legs. Those extend drives. He done that maybe once or twice all year.

Receiver depth is a problem again. They are either no scheming people open or the receivers aren’t separating.

Line wasn’t the problem.

The defense is the problem. The offense isn’t good enough to cover for it. Not sure how anyone can watch that Stanford offense that can’t run the ball and a QB that was been a turnover machine say Louisville’s play calling was the issue. Our defense had to scheme up 2 guys to defend and the staff/players couldn’t do it. Again Riley a NFL corner, supposedly, was torched.
Good post. You kind of touched on this but I think in the college game you have to have a QB that is some threat to run. When the defense has to account for the QB as a runner it opens up so much. And for the sake of everything good can Brohm stop running an option play. He ran it one time when we were methodically moving down the field and it lost yardage. An option play with a qb that can’t or won’t run is just bizarre.

Mayo's Musings from yesterday's cluster.....

The staff took Stanford offense lightly and didn’t scheme up any blitz packages plus had soft coverages letting a shitty QB and freshman WR torch them. Until you get a defensive staff that can scheme and coach you are going to get results like this. They decided at the beginning of the year they had the bodies to play Big Ten football in a pass happy league.

Pittsburgh game time ???

On the other hand, losing to Pitt and/or the Wildcats would really be the shit.

Cards really, really need a good turnout of support to make a statement that this fan base is not made up of a bunch of whiny, frontrunning turds.

No excuses....support the team. Do not quit now. Just like we fans are asking of the players to step up...the fans support of the team will show CJB, the team, the nation and the ACC who we are. The little engine that could.

Go Cards! Beat Pitt.

Mayo's Musings from yesterday's cluster.....

Maybe the HC should offer up some of his money to bridge the gap to pay more for key assistant positions ???
I know, just thinking outside the box. That likelihood is as about as possible as gettting into the SEC.

I hate to think it, much less say it...'the Bye' beat us this game. Focus and MO not sustained.

The ACC needs to rethink the scheduling issue. No more 2 bye seasons especially one early in the season at week 3. Lets play FB and focus on keeping the FOCUS on momentum...winning a big game then having a bye week sucks too...and it bit us in the butt this week.

Also, I really despise Clemson and Dabo winning like they did. Now Pitt is going to come into next weeks game with claws out and take pride in making it two in a row against the hapless Cards to salvage their season.

I hope I am wrong ,but two chokers facing each other is a sad, bad look for the ACC and one of them will take it on the chin again. This could have been a national highlight game had both teams played better and won their games.

Cards having five losses going into the UK game would be disgusting to me. At least the Cards don't have to play Texas this next game....just a pissed off Panther team...which is worse?

Oh well, 8 wins is still possible no matter how unlikely that is at this point in time. Cardinals got to find a way to get back up and end this season on a positive note. Just win the damn games like SMU has been doing. How good is coach Rhett Lashley?

The ACC really needs Miami (sic) to step up in a big way the rest of the season...in short to prove that it is not just Clemson and nobody else in the league...and to spoil the SEC/BIG media lovefest.

If the SEC gets 4-5-6 teams in and /or BIG gets 4 or more, CFB will suck forever more....and what has been my favorite college sport to watch will no longer be 'my favorite" anymore...and that just sux to me. :(:(:(

UL at UK will be a major challenge

Serious question. Is it recruiting or NIL? Brooks found several sizable players who can play. Recruiting or NIL? I think CJW needs to improve his asst coaching pool. I think recruiting took a dip a few years ago when we lost (his name escapes me, to Ms St). CJW added two assts and…meh. Our returning players - good lawd. Russell - let the game come to you and just play your role. Harris - I thiught she was going to blossom i to a real force. Instead, she still seems timid and not overly confident. Olivia - Sheesh. Her on-court facial expressions (comes off as pouting) is terrible. Her offense is limited. She just meeds to play defense and rebound - but - she is seemingly not pushing herself to rebound. We were a better team when Elif was in the game last night. We have three other 6’4”+ players who didn’t sniff the court.

Pittsburgh game time ???

Despite the disappointing and humiliating loss yesterday, the Pitt game remains critical to a Bowl opportunity and getting some momentum back for UK.

Card X, I feel your pain and understand the frustration that you are expressing about Brohm and this UL football team ….. but look around the college football scene, as just yesterday you will see things like #6 BYU losing to lowly Kansas, or Pitt giving up a KO Return for a Clemson go ahead TD with 1 minute to go.

#1 Oregon was lucky to survive 5-5 Wisconsin. If we beat UK ….. all will be forgiven!

We give Jeff another year. That’s all.

During the 4th quarter of our win at Clemson, I remarked that Brohm’s decision to go conservative and “run the clock” may be following the old textbook that was used 20 years ago. However, the game as evolved significantly and letting off the accelerator only gives the opponent a huge advantage when trying to make up a couple of TDs.

In fairness, the defensive penalties certainly gave Stanford a boost, but I believe Brohm going conservative offensively in the third and fourth quarter contributed to Stanford’s ability to come back, just as Clemson did. Running the football on 1st and 2nd down puts a lot of pressure on Shough and our receivers to complete a pass on 3rd down to sustain the series. We did that successfully several times, until we didn’t ……… giving the ball back to the opponent, who will most assuredly use all 4 downs, is just an invitation to help them have a chance to get back in the game.

I have no interest in talking about a coaching change, despite these unexpected and humiliating upsets like yesterday. Personally, I believe that Jeff needs to learn a lesson here …….. don’t let off the offensive accelerator when ahead. Shough was picking Stanford’s secondary apart, and we should have added to the 15 point advantage, rather than going conservative when trying to eat up the clock.

UL at UK will be a major challenge

I will never give up on any CJW team, but right now this team is vulnerable to any formidable opponent. What I witnessed in the 2nd half against UT Martin, was evident against UK, poor shooting and inability to finish in the paint. I am sure having Jada back could make a significant improvement in several aspects of our game, but it will not cover up for our weakness inside.

UK’s decision to hire Brooks will result in a marked improvement in the UK WBB Program. If he can be successful eliminating this team’s TOs, their size in the paint will pose problems for a lot of SEC teams this season.

Olivia went 1-11 from the field, had 6 RBs and committed 5 TOs in 38 minutes; Conversely each of the 3 UK Bigs had 13, 9 and 9 RBs respectively and combined for 38 points. A 5th year Senior like Olivia cannot perform that poorly and expect the team to win. If we had any one of those 3 UK Bigs, the outcome would have been different.
