Vanderbilt has been the most consistent team in college baseball in 2013 as they did not lose a weekend series the entire season and only lost 2 games in a row once. The main reason is that they execute at a high level. They can pitch it, defend well, and they can get guys on base and manufacture runs via the steal or bunting.

8 of Vandy's 9 starters are hitting over .300 and as a team they hit .317. They have 688 hits on the season and 505 of those hits have been singles ~ 73% (Louisville is 74%) They have stolen 132 bags and Louisville has stolen 147. Offensively these teams mirror each other very well in what they try to do.

Defense is a strong point for Vandy as they have committed 58 errors in 64 games. So when they do make an error it is important to take advantage of that opportunity. Louisville has 68 errors in 61 games. Throwing to the proper bases and hitting the cutoff man will be very important in this series.

Pitching. We will be facing 2 All-Americans in LHP Kevin Ziomek (11-2) and RHP Tyler Beede (14-0). Game 3 starter could be Lexington, KY native and midweek starter FR. Walker Buehler (4-3). Ziomek has 111K in 112 IP. He has allowed 74 hits and 34 walks with 4 wild pitches and 11 HBP. He has a deceptive delivery and pitches off the far side of the mound. Beede was a 21st pick in the 2011 MLB - in fact, he was the only 1st rounder not to sign. Beede has thrown 98 innings 59 hits, 60 walks, and 101K. He also leads the team with 14 wild pitches.

It is going to be a heck of a series. Louisville and Vandy usually play good games - 4 of Louisville's losses against Vandy have been 1 run games - this time it is the weekend arms going at each other. As mentioned above the team that executes, makes fewer mistakes, and takes advantage of opponents mistakes will win this series.

Re: Louisville vs Vanderbilt Super Regionals ESPN (Sat 3pm, Sun 4pm, Mon 7pm)

Cards take game 1 5-3.

A total team effort in this one. Helms gets the big hit, Chittenden with the assist on the last out. Rosenbaum, Lucas played. Kime struck out 2 and Ege was effective as usual.

Early on in the game Louisville couldn't execute the bunt very well as we had a runner on 1st in the 3rd and 5th innings but couldn't get the runner to second on a bunt. Then Louisville started executing and manufacturing runs. The 5th run was a classic manufactured run. HBP, steal, ground ball get him over, SAC fly to score him. Also, the cards scored some runs with 2 outs which is a great sign of toughness.

Game 2 matchup is Beede vs Thompson. Each team's top starter. Beede didn't have a good outing vs Illinois last weekend and can get erratic. The Vandy pen didn't throw Carson Fulmer - mid 90's RHP with a big time curve - and Louisville has guys like Funhouser, Filomeno, Philley, McGrath, etc still available and guys that threw tonight will be on board if they feel good and we need them. I would count Burdi out for tomorrow but we will see. Louisville will be the home team the next 2 games which in this series is key.

All of the pressure is now on Vandy as they are the ones that are supposed to win this series and advance to Omaha.

On a side note, all of the national seeds on Louisville's side of the bracket lost game 1 of the Supers. If that happens tomorrow then Louisville, Indiana, Kansas St, and Miss St. will advance to Omaha and the winner of that 4 team double elimination tournament will go to the CWS Finals.
