Vanderbilt
Record: 54-10
SOS: 17
vs RPI top 50: 27-6
Home: 34-5
Last 10: 7-3
Runs scored per game: 7.1
Runs allowed per game: 3.3
Vanderbilt has been the most consistent team in college baseball in 2013 as they did not lose a weekend series the entire season and only lost 2 games in a row once. The main reason is that they execute at a high level. They can pitch it, defend well, and they can get guys on base and manufacture runs via the steal or bunting.
8 of Vandy's 9 starters are hitting over .300 and as a team they hit .317. They have 688 hits on the season and 505 of those hits have been singles ~ 73% (Louisville is 74%) They have stolen 132 bags and Louisville has stolen 147. Offensively these teams mirror each other very well in what they try to do.
Defense is a strong point for Vandy as they have committed 58 errors in 64 games. So when they do make an error it is important to take advantage of that opportunity. Louisville has 68 errors in 61 games. Throwing to the proper bases and hitting the cutoff man will be very important in this series.
Pitching. We will be facing 2 All-Americans in LHP Kevin Ziomek (11-2) and RHP Tyler Beede (14-0). Game 3 starter could be Lexington, KY native and midweek starter FR. Walker Buehler (4-3). Ziomek has 111K in 112 IP. He has allowed 74 hits and 34 walks with 4 wild pitches and 11 HBP. He has a deceptive delivery and pitches off the far side of the mound. Beede was a 21st pick in the 2011 MLB - in fact, he was the only 1st rounder not to sign. Beede has thrown 98 innings 59 hits, 60 walks, and 101K. He also leads the team with 14 wild pitches.
It is going to be a heck of a series. Louisville and Vandy usually play good games - 4 of Louisville's losses against Vandy have been 1 run games - this time it is the weekend arms going at each other. As mentioned above the team that executes, makes fewer mistakes, and takes advantage of opponents mistakes will win this series.
