I am an old fan dating back to mid 60s, but my quick story may provide some insight about our shooting woes. I was at Freedom Hall before a UL vs Pitino coached UK team, and elected to arrive much earlier than usual and stood on the sidelines watching the UK shoot around. I was astonished then at the level of energy these kids exhausted as they rapidly shot 3s around the perimeter. It was obvious the intent of the drill was to focus on shooting 3s, but doing so while their heart beat was in an accelerated rate. The other value was shooting so rapidly there was no time to think, but rather rely on fundamental instinct.
I have been around basketball all my life, but I had never seen anything like this and my initial reaction was that UK was be gassed by the 2nd half. That was not only not the case, their energy by the end of the game was better than ours.
I am not sure what changes have taken place within CRP since then, but looks to me that emphasis is now on defense. Maybe reduction in NCCA practice time explains this, but I am a firm believer that you excel at what you practice and we may be seeing a changing of the game.
