An important ACC WSOC conference battle this evening in South Bend as the fourth place in conference, 7-2-1- (3-1 ACC) Louisville Cardinals women's soccer team travels to face the 10-1-1 (4-0 ACC), second place Irish.
In the scheme of conference standings points, the Cards have nine and the Irish have 12. (You get three points for a conference win, one point for a tie and no points for a loss). Atop the conference is FSU (11-0, 4-0).
The Cards enter the match after a 2-1 overtime win over Wake Forest last time out. Notre Dame took a 2-1 win at NC State last Friday their last time out.
The two squads last met back in Dec 2020, with the Irish getting a 1-0 win over Louisville at Lynn Stadium. The Cards were called for a "hand ball" in the 69th minutes and ND got a free kick on Gabby Kouzelos and the goal, which went in.
Notre Dame has been quite proficient in scoring as of late. The Irish have mustered a 15-2 scoring edge against the four ACC opponents they have faced. As for the Cards, they've scored seven goals while allowing seven goals in building their 3-1 conference record.
It probably should be pointed out that the Irish have built their 4-0 record against the bottom four teams in the ACC standings (Syracuse, NC St, BC and Miami) who are a combined 1-15 in ACC play. UND hasn't seen a goal-tender as good as Gabby Kouzelos yet.
Overall, the Cards are 4-12-1 against Notre Dame and are 2-6-1 in South Bend. Louisville last win over the Irish came back in 2011, a 1-0 shutout.
Tonight's match is at 8 p.m. ET and will be shown on everyone's favorite, new sports channel (RSN, Bally Sports).
<cough, cough>
That means Channel 70 if you have Spectrum -- I have no earthly clue what channel Bally is, or where will be shown on any other viewing options. They're bringing "exciting as toast" Tom Werme for the play-by-play and ex-VT WSOC star Morgan Conklin for analyst duties. Conklin knows her stuff, at least.
