What road trips are Cards fans making this season?

I'm a Tar Heel, but perhaps surprisingly, football has always been my biggest love. I cannot wait for football season to start, even though the Heels are going to be in a rebuilding year.

Louisville fans always impress me with how well they travel, so I was perusing y'alls schedule to see who else you face besides Carolina. Looks like true road games of UNC, NC State, FSU, Wake, and at Kentucky, and a neutral site against Purdue (neutral site = $$$$$ tickets, as I'm sure y'all are seeing).

What road trips are y'all taking? It's wild that 3 of your 6 games away from PJCS are in the state of North Carolina. If any of y'all are considering making the trip to Chapel Hill on September 9th, I'd definitely encourage it! Yes, I'm biased, but it makes for a pretty good weekend trip, for sure. If you want any tips / advice on where to stay, what to do, where to eat, where to drink, where to sit in the stadium, etc. let me know and I'd be glad to help!

I am considering going to chapel hill next season. I've heard the campus is really nice. I went to UVA this past year and was not disappointed. What do you recommend seeing while there?

Obviously I'm biased, but UNC has a beautiful campus. Generally, people lump Carolina and Virginia together when talking about beautiful southern campuses.

To better answer your question, tell me what you're looking for. Are you looking for watering holes? Nightlife? Fine dining? Local dining? Historical sights?

In general, Franklin Street is the hub. It's the center of Chapel Hill's downtown. Its Main Street, if you will. It's littered with bars, restaurants, ships, and a brewery or two. I'd certainly start there.

I'd highly recommend the trip. Yes, it will be hot in early September, just like in Louisville. It's unfortunate the game isn't later in the fall, as that's the best time to see Chapel Hill. But yeah, let me know what you're into (guys trip? Family trip?) And I can give you tailored suggestions.

Franklin Street sounds like a good place to start and hang out before/after the game. I would be interested in historical sites as well though. Monticello in Virginia was very interesting.

Purdue in Indy and FSU game in Tally
Buckle up for that trip to Tally!! It's a blast down there, but it's also crazy! I kid you not, one time I saw someone deploy a flashbang grenade at a tailgate in Tally. It's a fun town... bars galore.

I'd definitely start at Franklin Street. It's no secret that Chapel Hill has limited lots/space for tailgating, especially if you're not a Rams Club member with access to parking permits, so Franklin Street bars are a good substitute for traditional tailgating (I do know some good spots within a 20 minute walk of Kenan Stadium if you do want to tailgate, however). My personal recommendation for a pre-game spot would be Four Corners, on the corner of Henderson and Franklin. Solid pub grub menu, decent-ish beer selection, and usually pretty cute waitresses. It's jam-packed with TVs, so you won't miss any of the other games. It gets slammed on gamedays, so I'd recommend getting there early. All kinds of good restaurants/bars along Franklin St... Spanky's, Top of the Hill, etc. If you just start at Four Corners and walk West along Franklin, you'll see like 5-6 bars within two blocks. There's a few on the other side of the street as well. Typically speaking, UNC fans are very mild-mannered (especially for football), so you really shouldn't have any problems going to any bar/restaurant in full Louisville gear. Obviously, there's always 1-2 a-holes, but I'm fairly confident stating you should have zero problems outside the stadium, and honestly I'd be surprised if you had problems with Carolina fans inside the stadium, either.

Historically, speaking... the campus itself is very historic. UNC is the oldest state public university to hold classes (chartered 1789, first classes in 1795). Your walk from Franklin Street to Kenan Stadium will take you past Old East (now a residence hall) that is the first-ever state university building to hold classes, past the Old Well, UNC's iconic landmark, etc. etc. As for what's around Chapel Hill, I'd have to do some research. The whole Orange County area was very influential in the colonial era, so I know there's many historical sites around.

Hope that helps at least a little bit! I know it's a long, long trek from Louisville, but it makes for a good weekend. I wish we played at Louisville soon. I love y'alls city. Never been to PJCS though.

It's always on my radar, great place to visit. Good folks.
My first visit was in 1996 ?, maybe before the stadium expansion. I believe Mack Brown was coaching. UNC was ranked in the top 15, we lost by a couple of TDs. We had absolutely no Offense that year.
But my favorite visit was in the early 2000's under Coach Petrino. I remember the crowd, pre-game, chanting ACC, ACC… Cards won 34-0. No after-game chant. ;)
That nite, I never dreamed we would be in the ACC.
One more visit, a few years ago.

Vs. Purdue in Indy.
@ NC State (Thursday), Notre Dame at UNC (Saturday). Long weekend in NC.
@ Florida State
@ Kentucky

That's awesome! Well... except for the Louisville beatdown on us haha. It helped get Jon Bunting fired, though, so I'm okay with it ;) I'm glad you've had good experiences there. I remember the ugly, ugly game in 2011 where we won 14-7. Teddy's freshman year.

Dang, this is an impressive away slate. You'll see Kenan Stadium at its best for the Notre Dame game. Our fans are notorious for only creating our best possible atmosphere when it's a "name" opponent coming to town. Buckle up for that trip to Raleigh if you haven't been! NC State fans are very similar to Kentucky fans.

Our football team is definitely getting a lot of North Carolina exposure these past two seasons. Our 2016 home schedule was: Charlotte, Duke, NC State, Wake Forest ... plus Florida State and Kentucky.

My plans are pretty modest for road games this season - just the trip to Indy for the Purdue game (I live about 70 miles from Indianapolis, so it's an even shorter trip for me than the Louisville home games).

I did go to the UofL-UNC game in Chapel Hill in 2011. Loved that campus!

So what have been y'alls favorite away trip since joining the ACC? I see that y'all played at Notre Dame in your first year of ACC membership. Anyone on here go to that one?

I went up there that same year when Carolina played them. I didn't really know what to expect because whenever you interact with a typical bandwagon Notre Dame fan wherever you are in the country, they're super obnoxious. But I couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised with the whole experience up there. The stadium and campus staff is extremely nice and accommodating. The fans there are extremely nice. It was pretty bizarre. It was cool to be in that iconic stadium too. I'd definitely make the trip again next time we play up there.

The Notre Dame trip was great (especially since we won a thrilling game). As you said, their fans were great. The history and lore of the stadium, Touchdown Jesus, etc were awesome to see. For such a relatively new program like UofL, it was striking seeing so much history and tradition. The weather did suck and the town of South Bend is terrible and what the stadium has in history it lacks in amenities.

My favorite was Clemson last year (other than the loss). Amazing atmosphere, good places to stay/eat in Greenville, passionate fans that are exceedingly nice (unlike their few internet trolls), good weather. The upper deck there is almost frightening to navigate.

I try to make a few road games every year-and have never been to Chapel Hill. I would love to get over there, it isn't that bad of a drive actually. Not sure about my travel plans this year. The Purdue game really doesn't thrill me-I don't really like the Big 10. And FSU was a bad trip for me 2 years ago. The stadium is old, and I think the fans are really kind of arrogant. Not much interaction-they hate UF so much its really kind of strange. The FSU fans mostly just ignored us. I stayed in Panama City which is always a mistake. Clemson is a lock for me on travel years. As the UNC game gets closer I will dig more into it.
Off topic I just don't have a lot of enthusiasm this year. It may be how we finished last year-and I am really worried about the defense. I just don't expect much.

I was there for the UofL game in 2011. UNC fans were great and very welcoming. The stadium staff was the friendliest I have ever seen other than at Notre Dame. I have been around NC State fans before...they reminded me of kind of a mix between UK and IU fans....a lot of talk with ancient championships. They won't get under my skin. Looking forward to the trip!

Honestly, it depends on whether you're looking for "cheap" vs. "fancy" with respect to your hotel and to your dining. I'm 27 so my budget is pretty tight... and my tastes are pretty simple. So when I stay in a hotel in Chapel Hill, I stay in ones that run on the cheaper side. For dining, I just have simple tastes so all my favorite spots wouldn't be considered "upscale" necessarily.

But let me know if you're looking for high end or if it doesn't matter, and I can give you some suggestions.

I'm glad you had a good experience! I would say you are dead on about State fans (we call State "Moo" or "Moo U"). They think 1983 was 5 years ago and that they still have the right to be a Top 10 program in basketball.

Let's hope this year's game is a night game! September 9th in Kenan Stadium can be pretty dang hot, and the away section (and MY section!) are on the side of the stadium that gets the direct sunlight until the sun sets.
