imagine if Adel, in the penultimate game of 20-17-2018 vs #1 virginina, had not brain farted, properly inbounded the ball, thus we beat the #1 team in the land, go on to win the next game, make the ncaa's and make it to the sweet 16? David Padgett would possibly still be our head coach and maybe would have gone to the final 4 since. but Deng's brain froze, we lost on a hail mary 3, then lost the final game and ended up in the NIT. that simple play changed our fortunes for probably close to a decade.

Didn’t think of it in that light. While I was extremely disappointed with how the season played out and we didn’t make the tournament, I thought David deserved another year, especially because we still had the cloud over us. He’s a L1C4 and we will never know how things might have turned out with him at the helm. Certainly no worse. The style would have been more like Louisville basketball in my opinion.

No offense - it’s wonderful that Padgett is L1C4 but in the interest of staying consistent - there’s no way that he warranted the job. Louisville is at worst a top 10 job - we don’t need to hire guys with zero HC experience - regardless of their affability or prior affiliation to the school.

I agree on head coaching experience, I would like to David as part of our program in some capacity in the future. Maybe not as a coach but somewhere in the athletic department. He is young and he has a lot of time to gain experience.

Well for a guy that was an asst at IUPUI, he went 22-14 with a coaching staff that was assembled a few weeks prior to the season.. Not bad with the sanctions hanging over our heads..

And he got a million for his efforts. Worked out ok for him too.

Padgett is one of my favorite Cards of all time. I was hoping he'd stay in the business and maybe just maybe return if the pieces of the puzzle fit.

Racist undertones there. :D

Nah - it’s only racist when I say that an AA doesn’t have the requisite credentials and experience to be the HC at UofL. When the same claim is made about an unqualified white guy - that’s just me keeping it real and it’s all good. (Insert eye roll emoji)

I respect this opinion but head coaching experience doesn’t guarantee success. On the flip no heading coaching experience doesn’t guarantee failure. Tommy Loyd at Arizona was a long time assistant. He is killing it. Mack had all the experience needed he failed.

When you draw lines in the sand on these searching sometimes you miss on really good people.

I understand why Payne hasn’t been a head coach. The hard truth is if he picked his spot poorly he would never would of received another shot a HC especially at a Louisville.

I always looked as if KP did not want to take a mid-level head coaching job.

If you have been an assistant all your career, you got to start somewhere. You shouldn’t expect someone to turn over the reins to a P5 team. Even the Texas Tech coach had a lot of HC experience at small colleges.

then i'd guess you agree that kenny payne should not be an option for our next coach?

I’m not saying he shouldn’t be an option - on paper, he does have positives. I’m simply saying that he should be farther down the list that many people have him.

The seeming lack of initiative to be a HC on his part gives me pause. Whoever is the AD at the interview process - needs to ask him that question.

i'm with you 100%!

But what's that list?

I'm hearing a lot of Mick Cronin.

That ain't much of a list if I'm hearing a lot of Mick Cronin?

No in that event - it’s not much of a list at all. The list the fans hear is the one provided (mostly as clickbait) by media. It’s mostly lazy - no real reporting - just any current P5 coach who either would improve their lot or, have ties to UofL.

I see what you mean. I just don't know who is on the list so not sure where KP would be on it. I guess it's still early on maybe March clarifies things.

Well one thing appears to be for sure - whether the list has one name or a hundred - Payne is at or near the top of it.

I remain convinced that KP’s resume at UK alone, falls short of translating into candidacy for UL’s opening HC position. However, the NIL strategy that Bridgeman and Houston are proposing, could insure Payne’s success here in terms of attracting the NBA level talent that UK has enjoyed for decades.

In addition to the NIL factor, I expect the same success that Houston and Bridgeman have demonstrated over their personal and business lives, will include assisting Payne in putting an experienced staff together that transfers into production on the court.

This pretty much sums up where I’m at as well. Re-engaging the deep pockets - be it NIL or donations - is critical for UofL. If hiring Payne would do that and, he recruits at a high level, brings in a good batch of assistant coaches and isn’t completely inept at in game coaching - that would be great news and is probably the best that we could hope for.

What would wreck that, is if it would turn UofL into a mini version of uk - with all of the 1&D creating complete roster turnover every year with zero titles to show for it.

I really don’t much about NIL and how it works but doesn’t it guarantee Kentucky that with all their current NBA players couldn’t they just set up a funding pipeline to continue getting NBA caliber talent?
