We just were coming off the Year of the Cardinal! National Basketball Champions. Sugar Bowl Champions. Women’s Team making it to the big game. College World Series. Success all around!
Things were looking up. We just got our ACC bid after sweating it out for a bit and money was going to flow. Charlie was the hottest coach and just turned down Tennessee to return. Teddy Bridgewater was coming back to fight for his Heisman. Russ Smith was coming back for a repeat. Things were looking up.
Think about how insane the decade was after that happened. In football? That UCF loss stung, but we beat down Miami in a bowl and then turned around and did it for our ACC takeover. Charlie left, but Bobby came back. We won at Notre Dame. A man named Lamar Jackson arrived. Lamar beat down FSU in the biggest game we ever hosted to that point on College Gameday. We took Clemson to the limit and looked like a title contender, it fell apart. Lamar won the Heisman trophy. But then things fell apart. Bobby took us to the bottom. He got fired. Brohm said NO. Satterfield brought us back in his first year. Then Satt was average. Malik would set records, but then choke big games. Satt flirted with SC. Vince tried to fire Satt. Satt leaves for Cincy out of nowhere? Brohm comes home.
Basketball?? Rick had us back and ready in 2014. We lost the worst game ever to sUcKs. 2015 we missed a free throw in OT of the Elite 8. The scandals began in 2015. Then we self imposed and missed the 2016 dance. Donovan Mitchell was WOW in 2017. Then the FBI scandal came. Rick and Tom are gone. Padgett tries to salvage 2018. Remember that UVA loss? Mack arrives! He brings back some excitement in year 1. The Duke collapse was ugly. But then he signs the Super 6. We’re back to #1 in the polls in 2019-20. Then COVID ends that year. In 2021, we had so many COVID breaks we couldn’t get it going. Mack and Murray have fun with extortion. Mack gets fired. Kenny Payne arrives. Kenny Payne goes 4-28.
Let’s not even talk about the TJ to Vince to Heird. The Clown Show board. Neeli Bendapudi’s short time. I mean what a decade!!
Things have been a rollercoaster the last decade, but guys let’s remember that we’re in the ACC now. Jeff Brohm is home. We’re killing it in NIL in this new era. Heird isn’t Tom, but he’s not Vince.
In 1993 we were in a baseball stadium in the Metro Conference. In 2003 we were CUSA and John L Smith just left. In 2013, we just arrived in the ACC. We have a bigger football stadium. We have a Heisman winner. It keeps getting better.
