The Cards travel to Lexington this evening to play the Cats at 7pm. The game will be shown live on the SEC Network ( DirecTV channel 611). I'll be cutting grass and will miss most of it. Kick butt Cards! Take the Sweep!

Pouring down rain. Hummel off to a horrible start. Gave up 5 hits, 5 runs in bottom of 1st. Sparger pitching. Top of 2nd, McKay walks, Ellis singles. After throwing error by UK catcher, we have 2nd and 3rd no outs and Lyman at bat. Lyman hits a soft blooper that is caught by LF very shallow and throws out MCKay trying to score. Then Ellis tries to take 3rd and he's thrown out for a triple play. Searching UK records to see if they have ever turned a triple play.

The term "laying in wait" comes to mind. They're as good as we are and when you don't come to fight....ugliness.

Pathetic performance. 1st pitcher allowed it to start. Momentum from then on. I would've had the 1st pitcher out at 2-0 instead of 5. You could see where it was headed.

I'm not as worried about the result here as I am what we do finishing this game.

....except that we've just entered the twlight zone with the $EC interview with uk's coach.

Weird,to say the least.

Interesting side note (for me anyways). Colton Cleary, the pitcher who just gave up the homer and double to UofL, is my former UK roommate's son.

Obviously, we had a bad game. But that doesn't take away from uahkay as they have a very good baseball team and are well coached. We finished the game on an uptick and now we just need to get ready for Duke. I believe a regional site selection will be on the line in the next few games including the ACC tourney which will be held here at Slugger Field.

You never pull a starter that soon unless it is in an elimination game in the tournament or World Series. It would destroy a pitchers confidence. You allow the kid to work out of it if possible, plus it was only the 1st inning. We scored 7 so hypothetically we overcame those 5 early runs.

I hear you but mid week starters get handled differently. I guarantee that DM and RW didn't want to pull him after 1/3 of an inning. The reality was that he wasn't locating and the only reason he got 1 out - was the sac bunt. He got ample opportunity to show he didn't have his stuff last night - better to get him out of there before the game was completely out of hand.

Pitchers are like cornerbacks - they have to have short memories - he'll be fine.

I'm not disagreeing but relievers I understand. The college midweek starter is the guy who is most likely the guy who gets a start in either the conference tournament or if and when you go to the World Series, an elimination game to keep you from going home. Hummel is our most experience starter besides the weekend guys and if Bennett suddenly struggles or even McKay or McClure then you need another starter to step in not some guy who's worry that if he gives up a few hits or runs, he's going to be pulled. Some guys can handle it some can't.

Well hopefully that doesn't happen but in the event that it does, there are plenty of pitchers on the staff they could go to and quite frankly, who have better stuff than Hummel. Those guys that will be the starters next year might just have to step up.

There are only 3 guys who have started a game besides McClure, McKAy and Bennett. Mcavene has not pitched since April 4th indicating he may be hurt. Hoeing has been pitching in relief lately and not starting and then there is Hummel who was 4-0 before the debacle last night. You can't change relievers into starters over night. It takes a different mentality.

Agreed but as I said, a bunch of those guys are already being groomed to be starters and, some will be so next year. Or this year, if needed.

Williams is the absolute best at what he does for a reason.

A lot of valid points made here. As much as most of us don't like to admit it uahkay is a very good baseball team. And, with that said, they are, by far, the best mid week team on our schedule. So it goes that the starter versus them should have a problem unless he is absolutely on his best performance. Ladies and gents I don't think we have anything to worry about here. Yeah, it would have been nice to sweep them again this year, but it wasn't to be. I have a feeling that we'll face them again in the regionals.

Good game, Cards. Not the biggest follower of Kentucky baseball but I'm a fan of anything UK, so I watched the game. You guys have a very legit team this year, can easily see you all back in the CWS.

I had my doubts going into the year that UK would be able to make any noise, but this team seems legit and the program in general seems to be heading in the right direction.

Do we only play two games every season? Or is there a third game in there somewhere? TIA

Twice unless they meet in the NCAA regional tournament.

I'm not sure why Elliott isn't already the midweek starter. If I had to go to my 4th starting pitcher in the postseason, he'd be the guy...

I think he's a true frosh. But you gotta go with the hot hand this time of year, and manage everyone's feelings in the dugout...

You are correct zipp. He does have legit 92-94 fast ball but he hasn't yet learned how to use it. But, and that's a great big butt, his off speed stuff at 72-75 MPH is incredible, especially for such a young pitcher.

I think they are bringing him along slowly and maybe doesn't have the arm strength to start. The most he's gone this year is 3 innings. Good chance that McClure, McKay and Hentzman, maybe others are gone after this season.
