Throughout my career as an athletic director, I have maintained a belief that making a head coaching change during a season is rarely in the best interests of our student-athletes or program," UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero said in a statement. "In this case, however, it is now clear to me that what is best for our current students and for the overall good of the program, is to make this change now. While Steve led us to three Sweet 16 appearances, we simply have not been performing at a consistent level and our struggles up to this point in the season do not bode well for the future. On behalf of UCLA Athletics, I want to thank Steve, Tanya and the entire Alford family for their commitment to UCLA and wish them all of the best in the future."

I am surprised he lasted as long as he did given his underwhelming performance. He was good at Missouri St., over his head at Iowa and OK at New Mexico. A middle of the road mid-major coach at best. Those UCLA $$$$$ will buy a lot of house in MAC country.

I was a bit surprised they stuck with him as long as they did too. Just figured they were okay with the results he had produced.

Kerry, I've heard the Pitino rumor mill going as well, though it was mostly in jest.

Has to be rumors.
He s under a show cause or going to be right ?

He just started his new gig in Greece. Not sure what kind of contract he has over there with them.

The Pitino hire may make sense from a mid-season firing standpoint...

They could hire him now...but he could sit out the rest of the season to serve his suspension. Then next season he can start fresh for recruiting and summer coaching.

Me personally...I never hated Rick. (rare from a UK fan I know) He's a legend still coaching at a high level and I'd like to see him go out on a higher note. College basketball is better when he's in it...and it's better when a program like UCLA is relevant.

I went to Jeff High across the river back in the day. And one day Steve Alford came into the gym my senior year when he was still at IU and he lit up the place. I've never seen a demonstration again like that in my life. He shot the ball from every spot on the floor in the half court and never missed a single shot. The whole time he was shooting he was talking to us about form and rhythm. I swear he shot for 20 minutes non stop without a miss. Virtually all his shots were behind the arc. We just stood watched and shook our heads.

UCLA has a lot of tradition. A shame they have been off the radar this long.

They have had some talent come through there over the years. It would be nice to see them come back into relevance. I always did enjoy having them on the schedule under Crum.

IU fan told me that UCLA was going to hire pitino.

I replied "who ?

Well I do agree, but at least with Dick Pitino, they’ll actually get a coach. Why do all of these schools think Alford is a coach?!? He’s borderline mid major AT BEST. He’d make a good assistant in the NBA.

GO CARDS - BEAT EVERYBODY!!! God Bless America!!!

Those were different times. Little good comes out of California now.

RP and UCLA may be a good match. A down-and-out HoF coach with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove matched to a storied program needing some CPR.
