He brought money to the program. As well as notoriety. He may not have known about this but players had so little respect for him that they would do this to our program.
He has always belittled the players, the media, and fans. Part of his tv show he reserves time to preach to the fans because he knows so much more than we do.
I am sorry that your brother-in-law died on 9/11 but we all have deaths in our lives - that's part of life. My 25 year old sister was killed in a car wreck in 1978 at the age of 25 but I go on. I don't blame what I do wrong on her death.
He is a very complicated man who has kept himself separate from the fans - except those with $$$ - since the first year. (For that matter Jurich and many others do the same thing.)
The Cardinal Dames use to have a private event with the men's basketball team - no, they are mostly really old women. Denny had the event every year. Pitino dropped it, as he did many booster appearances. But funny thing, when Karen S started bothering him and he knew he would have to come public with it and needed booster support, guess what he did. Invited the ladies once again to a private men's basketball event.
The stars were aligned that he might have been saying the wrong things to one or two guys and this is how they got their revenge. Or, because of how they were brought up - or weren't brought up - this seemed like the way to go with some of the recruits and their fathers or whomever.
UofL has been one of the few constants in my life. My parents took me to games before Freedom Hall. Added football in the 80s; women's basketball in the 90s; and the other sports when we can. Yes, I am a grad. I even have ancestors in the 1800s who graduated from UofL. My husband; younger daughter; two uncles.
This just makes me sick. And to live in the city that is in the awful state with those other awful fans.....
Who has been hurt by this? The fan base yes. Those who will lose their jobs and/or go to jail. But to think that UofL people actually did this with underage girls. That part is being overlooked.
Pitino resign now. His whole staff. Scotty Davenport would be perfect to take over.
Mr. Jurich, be careful what you wish for. Look what you got when you convinced Pitino to come to Louisville. $$$

Ellen

With all due respect, Ellen, you're living (or trying to) in bygone times. I don't know that I'm much or any younger than you, but I recognize that those days are gone, here and everywhere.

The system isn't going to adapt for you and me. My advice for folks like yourself who can't or refuse to adapt is move onto other pursuits that you're comfortable with. A lot of U of L fans nowadays absorb themselves in the minor/olympic/non-revenue sports. Forget about U of L basketball and football--there are 20 other U of L sports to indulge in.

My 84-year old mother is a generation older but is still a diehard fan. Sometimes, I have to reason with her along these lines. And even at her age, she gets her head right because she can't NOT be a fan... :)

Excuse me. I have to accept this the way it is?
I belong to Central Cardinal Club.
Have MBB, football, WBB season tickets. Donated twice to the baseball stadium, Trager practice facility, academic center.
I will not change. I love UofL MBB but not what it is today because of a few individuals.
Can't adapt???????
What the f do you mean?
I have to accept underage prostitutes for the MBB players?
REALLY????
REALLY???
I am in the f'ing arena 1 1/2 hours before the game when it opens. I watch them warmup then we walk around the concourse a few times. I am in my seats for football when the game begins and usually stay to watch the ever changing/improving band at halftime.
I am there in my seats for the WBB game when the arena opens one hour before the games.
I travel to away games.
The only reason I do not drink much at the games because IT COSTS SO DAMN much. I pay UofL a hell of alot more than I should but I love the sports, the student athletes, the facilities, my family, and my UofL fans/friends.
IT'S a way of life.

Sorry but that made me bust out laughing.

I'm afraid you do. Most of what you just said applies to me too and thousands of other fans. Unless all or most of us say "enough", you're just preaching to the choir.

Much of what you're saying is that you don't like U of L's basketball culture. Star athlete, promiscuity, put whatever label on it you want. I'll lay you dollars to doughnuts that's also called "NCAA basketball 2015".

Now, if you don't care about competing hard for championships and landing 5-star high school kids, then we should be able to instill a new or improved culture. But when you tell an 18-year male that he can't party hard with girls at college, good luck winning most of your basketball games with that guy.

I may not like it anymore than you do. But I'm not asking for the changes you are. I wanna stay inside NCAA rules, and the rest is simply how good of an image U of L wants to convey. I can assure you that most of these kids aren't going to commit themselves to a monastery for four years...

We all make choices in life. Some are good. Some are great. Some are not so good and some are just plain bad. Along with those choices, lives other than our own are touched. It's up to each of us on how we CHOOSE to deal with choices made, regardless who makes them.

No matter the choices or the label placed on them, we ALL have to decide how to deal with them. Ellen, if you can't or won't decide to accept what has happened and move forward then move aside. There are plenty of fans ready to step up and take your place in line. Nothing lasts forever and we all eventually fade away to what most of us hope is a better place. I know you're a great fan and I respect you but you're just a brick in a very large wall. If you want out, you can get out. Just don't look back. Make a choice and go with it.

Why should she step aside. She clearly has a financial stake in UL and has every right to be heard. You all with your unabashed defense of all things UL is ridiculous in this case. I'm not even a fan but you people have no idea what you're talking about. She has every right to an opinion as the rest of you and probably has more staked in UL than the rest of you. If she feels her coach should resign then that's her right.

I understand how you feel Ellen.

Pitino has produced between the lines but we can all agree outside the lines he is not a HOF guy, and some of the examples you cited point to it.

I may be misunderstanding the OP, but it has a conspicuous nostalgic element. I enjoyed watching U of L basketball players in pickup games at Crawford Gym with my Dad in the summertime. But those days--and my Dad--are gone. And it has nothing to do with Pitino. For me to pine away about the "old days" and expect Scotty Davenport to lead us to championships is out of touch IMO.

I would very much like winning basketball AND a moral, spiritual culture at U of L along with it. However, those may be in large part mutually exclusive situations. And all the wishing and nostalgic idealism in the world won't change that...

Absolutely true. I respect her right to feel the way she does. Did you not read that? She has a choice to make since she feels the way she does. All I'm saying to her is to just make her choice already since she's pretty convinced she knows enough to make it.Personally I prefer to wait until all the facts are out there to digest but that's just me.

By the way, I respect your right to be heard too. Just don't try to stop me from being heard and we'll get along just fine. You have your opinion even though you have admitted you're not even a UofL fan. It's my opinion that makes your opinion of this situation pretty meaningless. You have no dog in this fight yet felt compelled to chime in. How odd.
