That's EXACTLY what some people believed, incl. highly placed people in U of L at the time. Why else self impose? We had a team with Lee & Lewis that could have challenged in the post season. We thought by self imposing, it would curry favor with the NCAA and that the harshest penalty would be in the rear view mirror.For those who are saying the post season ban didn’t work, what did you expect the NCAA to do? Say “Oh you decided to punish yourselves, so we won’t take away your banner even though you had players that received impermissable benefits play the entire season?”...
I advocated--evidently knuckles did too--that we NOT self impose. First, I wasn't nor am I still convinced that the punishment fit the crime. Nor did I trust the NCAA. No chance I would have self imposed without a firm deal with the NCAA. We got little or nothing out of it...
