This is Tyra's first hire which looks to be a good one. Wont annoint him yet based on one hire. TJ had many good hires and one disastrous one.

We think. I'm not trying to be negative here. Just being a realist. We think hiring Mack was a good hire. We also thought TJ hiring Kragthorpe was a good hire too, but it wasn't. Mack has to prove himself with recruiting and game wins. The jury is still out.
I’m also not really pleased about the way David was dismissed. Xavier fans claim that Mack talked with U of L during the BE tournament while in NY.
That might be true, but for now it's just hearsay. If that ever actually gets confirmed as true, then maybe it becomes a stain on Tyra's hire. Not sure that really matters though. Coach Padgett had to make it to the final 4 of the NCAA tourney to be seriously considered for the full time job. He failed to make the NCAA tourney, and didn't even make the NIT final four in spite of 3 home games. He sealed his own fate with his production (or lack of it) on the court. I will forever be grateful to coach Padgett, but he wasn't the right fit for the UofL job.

Disagree. Rick Pitino was a home run hire in 2001 He's still a great basketball coach. He has his own demons to deal with as do we all, but that doesn't take away from his coaching ability.
UofL has been talking with Mack’s agent for awhile. The guy lives in Louisville by the way. Anyways, that’s how these things operate. I don’t believe Padgett was treated unfairly.
That’s part of my point. It’s not a stretch now to think that David was never going to be seriously considered for the job. We or most questioned why he wasn’t given at least a year when we were doing well in the ACC early on. Now there’s speculation that the current BOT didn’t want David because of his connection with Pitino. As you said maybe he wasn’t the right fit but given his circumstances, he wasn’t given much of a chance.
Now come on! We had to take down the 2013 banner, forfeit a bunch of games and pay the NCAA a million dollar fine. Not to forget:
1. Sex on the table in a restaurant!
2. Hookers in the basketball dorm!
3. The Adidas mess!
4. Helping causing Ramsey and Jurich thier jobs.

I do agree he was a great basketball coach and he would still be our coach, if he had honor, integrity, and strong moral values. This is not a slam on you Cue, but I am just stating the values that drive my life.

You beat me to it Wilkie. I simply ask everyone on here, how was TJ doing as AD 6 months into the job? Was the YUM Center built within his first year? Papa John's stadium had already been built but was it expanded in 1997? Nope. Can't believe how impatient and how unrealistic expecations are. Patience. I'm willing to give TJ, who I've often called one the best AD's in NCAA history not just UL before he fell too deeply in love with Rick (cash cow), his due but it wasn't built in a day or even six months. Go Vince, like oyur style brother!!
All valid points wilkie01. I'm only defending Pitino's ablilty to coach. Nothing else plus looking back when he was hired in 2001, it was considered a out of the park home run hire. We can't just realign history based on more recent history. In 2001, he was the best available and TJ made it happen. In 2018, he probably is still the best basketball coach available. I expect him to coach again somewhere. The NBA would be a good place for him to land. They don't seem to care if high character is missing.
It's not a stretch at all. I suspect you are right. The BOT would have been forced to seriously consider David had he done better with a team that was preseason ranked in the top 20. (preseason #16). He lost at least 5 games that should have been wins. You turn those 5 losses to wins, and not only would the Cards have been in the NCAA tourney, they would have been a 2 or 3 seed, no worse than a 4. Losing winnable games cemented the BOT's position on David Padgett. Not his fault really since he was learning on the job but his learning curve is what cost him the job.
Totally agree, Pitino looked like a good hire, but with all the scandal, and officially he had 1 final four and no NCAA championships in 15 years...not what UL fans expect, so yes it was a bad hire.
I knew 3 days B4 Rick was hired. However, I was sworn to secrecy my boss, who was on the BOT at that time. I was even quoted in CJ. I said, "We got him,he is ours". I was so excited about the hire But in my wildest dreams I never thought Pinto's tender would end like it did. Neither did Ramsey, or Jurich. None of us did. But the past is dead and we live in the future. This should be forewarning to all administrators to never look the other way or over trust any one to much. Administrators need to have continual oversite and let their guard down. In today's world one big mistake can destroy your career. Case and point Ramsey and Jurich.
Nobody knew this mess was going to happen. But man, Ramsey trusted Jurich. Jurich trusted Pitino and Pitino trusted his assistant coaches. The problem was to much trusting, coupled with a lack of oversight. Gets people fired every time this happens. Pinto was true home run in 2001, but later on became a strike out king ejected from the game because of bad behavior. Pitino is the peime example of a political liability.

You are correct Zipp. But the point is you need to be constantly looking for concerns, because failure to look, find and know, usually cooks your goose.
Not sure it was a issue needing a crystal ball. Had steps been taken when RP embarrassed and humilated UL and his family. Jurich would b calling the shots today. Simply bad judgement. Nothing more. So see ya. Now some decent people can come in and give UL a new face and look. A lot like the Penn State situation. Penn St got some good new people in. Today. They are back on top. Doing it the right way. Hopefully UL took notes.. both situations dealing with minors and sex. Ughhh just disgusting . Good for UL moving g orward and dumping the trash.
I agree with the 2001 home run hire comment. However with that said, I told some friends recently if I had had a choice back then between Coach P or Coach K I’d have chosen Coach K based on the “known” morality of both coaches. Hind sight being 20/20 we know that both are outstanding coaches but we know one of them is willing to “copulate” with a ho in a restaurant and to NOT manage his staff properly. WTH I was willing to understand human failings so long as his family forgave him but his actions have cost UofL a major part of our reputation and I cannot abide by that. I’m glad he is gone. Tom Jurich is another matter as he was also guilty of not managing one of his top employees and it cost him, and us, dearly. TJ will get his money as he should, but RP should simply walk away with whatever he has. As far as a “crystal ball” on Coach Mack, or even Vince Tyra, I can’t find one yet but I choose to get on board.

I'd expect a little better effort with our synergy turning positive in the last week and our athletic program outlook being back to first in the state ♂️
He was definitely considered a grand slam hire at the time. Most of us were thrilled and looking forward to another period like Denny gave us in the 1970's and 1980's. Too bad Pitino did not bring his A game. He had already lost the desire that made him great at UK after he got here. Could he still prepare a team and coach? Absolutely. Was a generally a lousy recruiter and poor manager of the program? Absolutely.
I would venture to say that a large number of institutions would have cut ties with Pitino after the incident at Porcini. Had he been given his walking papers then , much embarrassment and damage to the University would not have taken place. Unfortunately we will have the trolls to deal with for many years to come. It is way too easy to rehash every sordid detail and put it out there. In time that will be less prevalent. The sooner we have major success the sooner those incidents will be behind us.

I believe that all of these coaches or their assistants should do EXACTLY THAT on a regular basis. I was a pretty good kid and lived in dorms at UK and Georgetown College ( a Baptist College) and looking back cannot believe some of the stupid ,immature things I was a part of!

You are correct. Coaches dealing with the type of culture that many of the players and even some assistant coaches bring into the program these days requires them to constantly monitor all activities. If that had been done, there is no way a McGee could have done the things he did that cost us so very much. Pitino is absolutely to blame for a complete lack of oversight.
Not only was Pitino not fired after the Sypher stuff came to light, he was given a raise and extension shortly thereafter

simply, padgett only had a six month contract so seeking other options before the six months is up is smart. second, pitino's hire was a home run, but after all is said and done, we'll take the title but he embarasssed us beyond compare even if he didn't know about things, he was the chief so his fault for hiring those below him. as for tyra, he seems to be the same person behind the scenes as he is out in public which is something i like. he's engaged, and he's not shied away from the balme. so off to a good start. he needs to re-sign a few coaches to continue the progress. and it's one step at a time. not anointing him for anything, but i like what i see and hear so far. and i think a thank you is deserved. pretty simple gesture

David was an interim coach. The chances of him being hired as the permanent coach were small. No reason for us not to talk to Mack at the time.
