The New Orleans Saints made a stunning move on Wednesday, acquiring quarterback Teddy Bridgewater in a trade from the New York Jets, according to multiple reports.

A first-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 2014, Bridgewater signed a one-year deal with the New York Jets in March. He was impressive in the first three preseason games, going 28 of 38 for 316 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

However, the Jets drafted Sam Darnold third overall this year, and he'll be their long-term quarterback. They also have a veteran backup with Josh McCown, which made it difficult to keep Bridgewater and his $5 million salary.

Thank God he isn't going to Pittsburgh to be the heir apparent to Ben R. I'd hate to have to root against the guy, I already have to root against Lamar since he is a Raven.

Teddy is only 25; this gives him a great opportunity to learn the Saints system under a great QB and then be the starter for years after Brees (age 39) retires.
Difficult to do when you only have a one year contract and you play behind a future hall of famer. Teddy needs an opportunity.

That’s what we thought when the Jets got him.

No....the Jets signed him as a true Free Agent with only being on the hook for $500K-(His Signing Bonus)....The Saints gave up a 2019 3rd Round Pick for him after they had already traded their 2019 1st Round Pick....NFL Teams don’t do that ...they are investing in Bridgewater....Drew Brees will be 41 after the 2019 Season at the end of his Contract....

On SiriusXM NFL Radio Phil Simms and Former Jets Front Office Executive Pat Kirwin blasted teams like the Jacksonville Jaguars for not nabbing Bridgewater....Both felt Bridgewater under Sean Payton could be something special...

You better reread the deal. Saints gave up 2018 3rd round pick and are only on the hook for the rest of Teddy’s 500,000.00 contract. Not a big risk on their part. Hope it works out for Teddy but it seems teams are not convinced yet. Teddy’s only signed for 1 year.

New Orleans was the site of Teddy’s greatest triumph. Perhaps some of the magic is still in the air.

Geaux Teddy, Geaux!

NFL teams don’t throw away 3rd Round Picks...So the Saints really really wanted him...it is like this...they can resign him and even if they don’t Bridgewater is in a great spot ...if Brees retires he is the Heir Apparent...if he walks he is looking at probably $18 to $20 Million-(Mike Glennon Contract For past reference)...also in case you didn’t know...The Saints since he is on their roster is on the hook...once the season starts-(on the opening day roster which he will be since the Saints gave up a very high draft pick) his contract becomes guaranteed for the season per the CBA...from CBS Sports to prove my point....

The trade means that the Jets basically paid $1 million for an extra third-round pick. When the team signed Bridgewater back in March, they only had to pay out his signing bonus ($500,000) and his workout bonus ($500,000). The Saints will be responsible for the rest of the contract.

Speaking of the Saints, if coach Sean Payton is hoping that Bridgewater is going to be the quarterback of the future in New Orleans, then the team is going to have to sign him to a long-term contract, As things stand, Bridgewater is signed only through the 2018 season and is scheduled to be a free agent in March. If the Saints didn't rework Bridgewater's deal before the trade went down, then the quarterback will make a $5 million base salary in New Orleans this season.

I think there's a little bit of everything in the air on this move. The Saints probably like most, are not convinced about the knee. Thus, just a one year contract. However, the chance to observe Teddy firsthand and get a former starter in the league to boot as a backup and possible replacement to Brees, is likely their motive. If they determine the knee is stable, all bets are off going forward.

No doubt Teddy appears to be in a little better situation going from basically a 3rd string QB to 2nd string. I believe though given the chance he would have at least in the short term been a better option than Darnold and Mccown. The ideal situation for Teddy would have been Jacksonville or Tampa where he could compete immediately for a starting QB position. Why is that you keep hearing negative stuff about Winston and Bortles when I have never heard one negative about TB?

I agree with that...was listening to SiriusXM NFL Radio and their host who many are former NFL Front Office Personal kind of blasted Jacksonville for not inquiring ....they have a Super Bowl Roster with a glaring hole at QB

Drew may retire after this season and a talented young vet. like T.B. could keep the offense rolling while the defense continues to improve.
