Withers gone opens up another spot. Not sure the exact scholly numbers.

Would Iike to see Payne add two more guards if Ellis leaves- another good PG and another combo guard/shooting guard that can shoot the 3.

Plus another beefy big that can rebound, score some, and defend at center from day one.

two more guards and a big
Assuming El doesn’t come back it can look like this
Starting 5: Transfer PG, Flowers, James, Huntley-Hatfield, transfer C
Bench: Clark, transfer guard (Sean Conway would be nice here as an off the bench heat check option), Traynor and Evans

Clark would be more likely to start than Flowers IMO.

I agree that Clark would seemingly be the starting PG or maybe SG depending on who we get in the portal.

I know Koron Davis is listed as an SG, but I kind of keep forgetting about him. I guess that at 6'7" he has to prove that he has the handles and ability to play SG at this level.

Let me say that I’m thrilled with the guys KP and staff are bringing in and I desperately hope that this turns the program around. That said, I just haven’t seen one thing that suggests that KP has the coaching chops to make the most of these players. Last year’s team was constantly lost and confused on defense…all year…no improvement. We had plenty of length but we sucked at rebounding. Last night, Coach Walz said that if you tell a player to block out and they don’t, we lose…they may not block out. But if you tell a player if you don’t block out you’re gonna run the stairs…they block out! I don’t see this from KP and the team had no commitment to what they were being taught. No consequences. Until that changes, I’m not convinced our teams will play well.

Bingo. The biggest red flag from last year is that players were allowed to jog back in defense and still play. KP’s only hope is getting players who are self-motivated.

I’m interested in seeing what Ellis does. Skill sets aside - Cards will need guys with right mindset and willingness to share the ball, etc… Play well together as a team.

The dynamics of next year’s team will be different so if Ellis does comeback… how does he handle those new dynamics? He may not be “the guy” or the primary PG (hopefully not).

Clark is a nice pickup but if he is not in the right place mentally and Ellis comes back playing like next year’s team is this year’s team or is in the wrong mindset… you can see how things could potentially go sideways with an inexperienced head coach. Just something I’ve thought about.

All that said, I think Clark is going to be good for the Cards.

With the news that Flowers has been playing at SG, and prefers that position, it's making me wonder if Payne is going to get a couple more guards or not. He might be thinking with Clark, Flowers, and Davis manning the guard spots that they are good at guard. Of course he might still want one more guy for back up PG which I think would be wise. But maybe he thinks the SG spot is good for now. Who knows.

Team definitely needs a Center with size that can hopefully score in the post, rebound, and block some shots that can contribute right away- not a skinny project type. Okorafor works hard but is still very raw. BHH showed some flashes but would like another option. And Evans is very thin which may be okay in most instances but he is a true freshman and very young.

That is a mistake on Flowers imo. I think he can play the 2, but I would like for him to play there in spurts and at the 3 most of the time. Last 3 scholarships need to be two guards and a center from the portal who are highly regarded.

I agree with all of your points. Two more solid guards and a very good center from the portal would be ideal and make a complete team IMO.

Maybe the FAU center will go portal and get some love from CKP. Naw, he looks like a St Johns type of player now. Watch out for RP and the portal this year.

Cards pretty much have to nail it in the guard department. This tournament is showing how vital great guard play, especially PG, is to advancing in March. Shooting and handling up there too.

^^^^THIS^^^^ Guards are the stars and few, if any, teams advance without them. KP needs say this to himself in the mirror every day!!
