He lays it out pretty open and honest. Coaches have to change the way they recruit and utilize recruiting budgeting. Players number one concern now isn’t facilities or fit with a coaching staff, but “how much can i get paid?”.

Doesn’t this have to somehow be regulated or should the free market be allowed to do what it will do?

I remember when Steve Alford was playing at IU. I pretty much agree with everything he said. Not only is the current system bad morally, it’s not sustainable. We are reaching a breaking point, where universities are going to have to separate themselves from their athletic programs or lose all credibility.

It’s not gonna be easy to put the genie back in the bottle but I agree.

Best scenario may be to let the top 50 revenue generating football and basketball programs form a super league and do a total regional realignment of all other D-1 schools and model like it is the NAIA.

Alford was suspended for a period one year at IU for appearing in a charity calendar IIRC. IDK for how long, but it did involve their game vs. the school to our east. Caywood Ledford used to an interview with the opposing coach before the game and made the comment to RMK about their games being special. RMK responded with "they're not that special given all the stuff that gone on at UK." Or words to that effect. Caywood was at a loss for words and suddenly a had a respect for RMK speaking what we all knew.

Some things you remember forever. And some things never change!

It is messed up, but it always has been. The most talented kids followed the money. Nevada was never getting elite kids. I can only imagine what it is like for Alford to have to pay players that suck. Then you find a couple dudes then they get poached. That would be miserable from a coaching perspective.

Dick Vitale nailed it the ACC schools haven’t invested in NIL or their coaching. Many of the schools haven’t adapted to the new world. The ACC isn’t churning players they are losing their best players. In football the SEC churns players. The evidence is clear which conference has invested in sports it isn’t the ACC.

Knight kind of massaged Alford's suspension to occur on the YewKay game date as a big FU to them and the NCAA, IIRC. He chose that game to highlight how Alford got hammered for appearing in a charity calendar while YewKay was being YewKay with their players.

Sounds like he needs to retire and go find something else to do. He's out of step. Free market for me but not for thee. Didn't hear him mention his bloated salary. He's making over 1M to be a mid-major HC.

There are other levels of the sport where he can choose to work for free or peanuts that are more aligned to his beliefs where he can make a difference in people's lives, but he's not doing that.

The ONLY thing I like about the current state of BB it’s made uk just another Joe in the sec now that all the schools can do what uk got away with for 60+ years.

I believe it is only going to get worse for them as “resources” in KY aren’t near what they are in a lot of other places.

The ONLY thing they’ve had is now eroding away just as it is at many other schools.
