Louisville coach Rick Pitino said sophomore forward Ray Spalding had offseason groin surgery and redshirt senior center Mangok Mathiang will be out another four months in a new blog post Monday.
Spalding, Pitino wrote, needed the surgery to "alleviate a problem" and lost some strength and weight, but he should be back "in no time." The 6-foot-10 Spalding figures to be a key player for Louisville after a solid debut campaign that saw him average 5.6 points and 4.3 rebounds in 17.5 minutes per game.
As for Mathiang, who was shut down from workouts after having scar tissue cleaned out from his foot, Pitino said the big man should be ready to play by Nov. 1. Pitino said in May that Mathiang would need about six weeks of rest.
