Something needs to be done about officiating

I'm sitting here watching Indiana getting totally hosed at Wisconsin by the refs. I'm not a IU fan, I'm a college hoops fan and what has happened to the Hoosier in the 2nd half is a travesty.

I know because I've seen it before many times with the Cards. IU fans have to be fuming. I know I would be. IU had a 17 point halftime lead and got it to 22 and then the Badgers made a run, helped by three absolute terrible whistles they were blatantly obvious bad calls. Wisconsin scored 8 points off those three calls.

Of course IU did their part by missing point blank bunnies and FT's but without the refs I believe IU would have hung on.

IU has not won at Wisconsin since the 1990's. Maybe it's the red uniforms?

If you think it is bad at Wisconsin, you need to visit Mackey Arena for a Purdue home game against non conference opponents!

I watch a lot of games like this and some wonder about point shaving, payoffs or homer refs. It would be great if there was someway to police this but it seems the conferences do the opposite. They even penalize coaches if they speak out against it. I also wonder if due to the pandemic if they are using refs closer to home which could make the ref get caught up in the emotion of the game.

If I were the head coach at IU I would hold a press conference with video of the aggregious whistles right in the middle of Wisconsin's run. How the officials stopped IU from ending the run twice in a 3 minute stretch with obvious wrong calls that enabled Wisconsin to keep the run going.

Wisconsin got their deficit down to 9 points and IU scored a bucket down low and there was contact and the whistle blew. Traveling was called. It was so ridiculous that even the announcers made lite of it instead of really being critical.

Wisconsin makes a 3 on the next play so its suddenly a 6 point game instead of it being a 11 point lead for IU. The about a few minutes later a loose ball hits a Wisconsin player standing out of bounds under the basket but the ref gives the ball to Wisconsin. The announcers once again say something but only for a few seconds.

IU still should have won but they were totally rattled, complaining more than focusing on what they need to do to counteract the run.

Like so many fans I find it very difficult to believe officials would knowingly help one team over the other but when the officiating for most of the game was fine but during a 10 minute stretch, they suddenly make a bunch of bad calls it makes you wonder.

Coaches can't complain so it continues. I normally rant when this happens to Louisville but last night it was so unbelievably obvious that those bad whistles were essential for Wisconsin to come back and beat IIU. A team that was dominating them for 25 minutes. It reminded me so much of Louisville and the many times this happens to them.

So I ranted and continue to do so the next day.

I believe refs go into each game knowing the agenda. It gets real tricky to get to the truth in a matchup like this one. IU also has a history of protection, given their tradition. But WISKY does have a home cook setting that is reminiscent of the type of thing the Cards see when they play UVA. Or maybe at Clemson. Or back in the day at Marquette. Ya know, the willingness of refs to "let 'em play" on one side of the court but tighten it up big time at the other end? They can muscle your guys out but you can not contest anything they are doing when they have the ball. Those "off the ball fouls" seem to constantly be called on one team but not the other. I remember an announcer of a UVA game said with a straight face, "They just don't foul!" yeah sorry but that's just not a thing. They are just protected.

The thing that for sure happens in these games is refs get swept up in a comeback moment. There is this tendency to feel pity for a team getting owned, so if they begin showing a pulse they may naturally give them a hand on the way with a few atrocious calls. Once the crowd gets back into it, then it's a real sh!tshow.

They are supposed to be evaluated each year. So the question is, are they following their orders?

That is so true. The officials protect the home team intuitively, especially when the players show their frustration at having their asses handed to them.

Then the refs see the cocky road team celebrating almost daring anybody to do something about it. If it's just one official it isn't as obvious but when two of the three are protecting the home team, we see what happened to IU last night.

Last night a buddy of mine who's a IU fan called me about a hour after my message board rant. He doesn't do the message board thing so he didn't know if I even watched the game. I haven't talked to him since IU was pummeled in football by Cincinnati.

He wasn't happy. He told me he thought of me and Louisville after the Wisconsin game last night. I apparently have a reputation for bashing referees. Hee hee.

I'm sure we Cards fans will see it ourselves a couple of times this season. You're right Hopgood about Clemson and you can throw in Notre Dame as well. I never have confidence when we play there.

And the thing is it just hurts the beneficiaries in the long run. If they are getting helped to the wire in the regular season when they get to post season on a neutral floor with other conference refs a lot of that help is just no longer part of it. So it hurts everybody. It hurts the team getting screwed and it hurts the team in the long run receiving the help of BS calls. Yeah throw in ND. Good call. They had that incredibly long home winning streak which just didn't make sense because they weren't like some T10 team over the time frame of the streak. What is going on in S. Bend? 8 on 5, that's what LOL!

I don't see it changing any time soon.

I remember Pitino saying that you got a fair whistle on the road in Big East, but much more homer calls in ACC. I agree.

Jim Burr would go out of his way to make calls against the home team, or so it seemed.
