To pay a guy $300k more than his prior employer when he demonstrated little success in his one year at the prior position certainly raises some eyebrows. Given the potential buyouts or settlements with Pitino and Juirch, along with the money owed back as part of NCAA sanctions, things are going to be financially tough for UofL. Looks to me that some of these contracts are just irresponsible.

New University of Louisville defensive coordinator Peter Sirmon is making $950,000 annually under a three-year contract, according to a copy of the document.

That's $315,000 more than he was reportedly making last season as defensive coordinator at Mississippi State, and it's $350,000 less than what U of L was paying former defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, who left the Cardinals to swap jobs with Sirmon and become DC at Mississippi State.

New U of L defensive backs coach Lorenzo Ward, meanwhile, has an annual salary of $375,000 under a three-year contract, according to a copy of the document also obtained through an open records request.

Sirmon's new U of L salary is higher than the 2016 salaries of all but 13 Football Bowl Subdivision assistant coaches, according to a USA TODAY database. Sirmon's pay at Mississippi State last season ranked No. 43 nationally.

In the Atlantic Coast Conference, only Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables ($1.431 million) and Grantham ($1.3 million) made more last year than what Sirmon will make this year.

Ward will make $75,000 more this year than his U of L predecessor, Keith Heyward, made last year. Heyward, who left U of L to join Oregon's staff, had been working for the Cardinals under a three-year contract that paid him $300,000 in 2016 and was to pay him $350,000 in 2017 and $400,000 in 2018.

The total value of Ward's three-year contract ($1.125 million) is $75,000 greater than Heyward's was ($1.05 million).

The contracts for Sirmon and Ward both began on Jan. 13 and run through Jan. 31, 2020. Both coaches also receive a $500 monthly car allowance, eight football season tickets and two basketball season tickets, which are benefits that each of U of L's football assistants get.

Both assistants' contracts state that if head coach Bobby Petrino is either fired or quits, U of L has the right to terminate the assistants while paying them for six months, unless they find new jobs that pay as much or more than U of L was paying them.

Sirmon would owe U of L a $75,000 buyout if he decides to quit before the end date of his contract.

It's more about recruiting than coaching imo. When you're already thin on the defensive line and you don't sign any, how can that happen? The head coach needs to be on top of careless sh** like this!!!
