Should UofL evolve its student recruiting focus?

I know this is not a topic that probably comes up anywhere but with the President as well as the Board, but it's something I've been thinking about lately. Should UofL change it's student recruiting focus?

We all know the strides UofL has made in the last 20 - 25 years, transforming from largely an urban commuter school with no student life (students leaving right after their classes are done) to a very traditional urban land grant university that has a very active student life and a significant portion of students living on or near campus. Heck who would've thought even 15 years ago that we would be at the point where freshmen are required to live on campus unless they are from the Louisville area and live with family. But that has happened and the transformation has I think been satisfying to all of us, whether you are an Alumni or just a friend of the university.

My question is this, what is the next step? My feeling is that the next step needs to be a change in our student recruiting focus. The vast majority of our students still come from the Louisville area, areas out in the state and areas in Indiana and Ohio. I'd like to change that a little bit and see our recruiting efforts focus more regionally.

In a way I would say forget about the state outside of the Louisville area (Jefferson, Oldham, Shelby, Bullitt, Hardin, Spencer and Nelson counties), let UK have that area. We are never going to be #1 in those areas to begin with. Plus most of those students are more country oriented and I'd like to see us focus on getting a more urban sophisticated student population. I'd like to see us have a regional focus, continue to focus on the Louisville area but also put a heavy emphasis on the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area as well as the Southern Indiana area. I would like to see us start really recruiting the Indianapolis and Chicago areas as well as the Nashville, Columbus and Atlanta areas. I think these are areas we could really do well in and improve our quality of incoming students. Kids from these areas would see the ability to go to a university that is in a developing urban area and not just some small college town. It would also grant them access to some growing industries that Louisville is home to.

I'd love to see future student classes breakdown like this:

Louisville Area: 35%

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Area: 15%

Indianapolis/Southern Indiana Area: 15%

Columbus Area: 5%

Nashville Area: 5%

Atlanta Area: 5%

Rest of Kentucky/rest of U.S.: 5%

Foreign born students: 15%

I feel like the next step for UofL is to start serving more affluent and diverse areas and slowly de-emphasize the poorer areas of the state. I would like to see 50% of all incoming students in future years at UofL come from outside Kentucky. In fact I would be okay with stopping all recruiting in Eastern Kentucky (anywhere east of I-75), Western Kentucky (anywhere west of Bowling Green/Owensboro) and Southern Kentucky (anywhere south of Elizabethtown). In terms of the state of Kentucky just focus on Louisville, Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky and the stretch in between.

I'm not saying that out of dislike, I'm just saying let UK, EKU, Morehead, WKU and Murray service those student populations. We need to expand and diversify our student base and this is the way to do it. Doing this IMO is the next step in the transformation of UofL. What do you think?

UofL spends quite a bit of time recruiting students from across the country. During the ACC tournament in New York they held events for student recruiting. As we continue to grow in the ACC you will see more growth in national recruitment. As far as the state of KY, UofL has been and will always be an option for all students in the state. It's silly to assume that if a student is from Lexington, Frankfort, Richmond or any other city east of Jefferson County they are not interested in Louisville and everything our school and city has to offer them.

The obvious question...how does this relate to football?

One big oversight in the OP may be the effect of students paying in- or out-of-state tuition. But again, I'm not sure why we're discussing this on a football message board...

That's an easy answer Zipp. First of all, it's the off season, not much is going on football wise until spring practices begin. Second, for some reason this board doesn't have a non-topic or non-sports board like the scout site does (which is something it should). Third, while not sports related it is still relevant since it is UofL related.

Currently attending U of L, and I am from western KY (Paducah). Louisville currently gives the better scholarship options for students in KY compared to UK at least based off of what I've heard from friends at UK and my own experience. UK only gives 10 full rides per year and then tuition scholarships to GSP (Governer's scholar program) students only after that. I missed out on GSP because of budget cuts and was slightly short of the ACT score to apply for full ride there. Louisville's trustees scholarship is given in a variety of dollar amounts and is a very good option for students looking to go to college for cheaper than UK. I think eventually people will realize this out in the state and louisville will draw even more students. With the on campus development and opportunities like these I look for the university to do well in the state in the future.

Interesting how you gave away Oldham County as there is a large population of UL grads in Oldham County. It is the most highly educated and wealthiest county in the state. I think we should continue to recruit throughout the state. The headway we've made over the last 20 years within the state has been tremendous. And don't underestimate the quality of many of those students. It will benefit the University in the future with funding and political issues. Although I agree it is good to diversify, but that's taking place. My daughter who just graduated had friends from Chicago and Columbia to name a few.

Not sure what you are talking about here. I said nothing about oldham county. Just said how we don't need to stop recruiting the rest of the state of Kentucky.

Sorry meant to quote the OP 83GoCards.

Current student body consists of:

In-State- 16,723. 9,396 of that are from Jefferson County. That's about 42% of students. Not too far off from your desired 35%. Now, 7,327 students are from all other Kentucky counties. That means 32% of the student body are Kentuckians not from Louisville. I doubt that number becoming 5% ever happens. Out of state students= 5,917- 1,018 being from Indiana. 4,899 from other states and countries. That's 22% of the student body. I think the student recruiting focus is pretty strong in that regard. Where these out of state students are from, however, I have no idea.

To appease zipp, just put an "OT" before your header. The Off Topic forum here used to be free. Why they chose to go premium when it was rarely used in the first place is a head scratcher.

I am an alumnus of UofL. Grew up in Bardstown, now live in Virginia.

From my perspective, I can say without a doubt recruit the "best minds" forget about where they come from. Similar to how I feel about broader issues, but I digress.

The one thing that is becoming more and more popular is online education, so IMO that is an area we should spend time/investment in to build for the near future.

As long as all Kentuckians are paying taxes to the University, all Kentuckians can be represented.

Plus most of those students are more country oriented and I'd like to see us focus on getting a more urban sophisticated student population.
idont know what this means. Are you suggesting urban students more academically astute than non-urban students? Because the data suggests the opposite. UofL is in a very good position right now when it comes to admissions. No need for changes. The more hillbilly geniuses from Prestonsburg and the more brilliant African-American students from Marion Co the better.
