With Adidas dropping potential $200 million plus in the athletic program, should the stadium be named after Adidas? Not sure when the naming rights is up with Papa John's but this may be in the contract with Adidas. What say you?

Adidas sponsors several teams. I don't believe they would want to show partiality to one school. I think UPS makes more sense as a recognizable Louisville sponsor.

When does the naming rights to our stadium ends? Whenever it does think Jurich will want to get a new name for the stadium?

I would say when the contract is up they will look to make a change. With the disparaging remarks made by John Schnatter regarding Tom Jurich and leaving his position I would say a change will be forthcoming. I believe Adidas would take the name in the future.

This is an interesting LINK with details on Papa's naming rights contract. I've never read the actual contract(s) for the amount and form of payment.

The essence of what I read is that Papa is getting one helluva deal considering what adidas is paying us. Adidas would probably pay in a heartbeat for that same deal, and I have little doubt they would be offered.

It's interesting reading the author's comments near the end, that Papa may be getting too good a deal in the IRS view considering he's also on the U of L BOT. If that's anywhere close to being true, the future of his naming rights contract and/or his Board position are unclear...

It appears that the contributions started on August 1st, 1997. If memory serves that was approximately 2 1/2 months prior to Tom Jurich being named AD at UofL so it appears that the stadium was mostly constructed prior to pj's involvement. I'm not sure but I thought those arrangements changed with additional contributions from PJ. At least I sure as hell hope so. As another poster suggested perhaps UPS would be a good future naming partner. OR we could just call it APSS - for arrogant pr*#k schnatter stadium. Or we could just drop the P from the new name. In fact I think I'll start calling it that immediately until he decides to apologize for his stupidity. Naa, I'll just refer to it as CARDINAL Stadium because it IS OUR STADIUM, not his.

The man paid the money when we needed it to make things happen. So he said a few things out of turn and has a huge ego. All these guys have outsized egos. I'm pretty sure that Papa John has seen who has the power through this self-inflicted situation. Move on and keep cashing those checks $$$$.

He is under contract to continue those checks. I'm sure that he has been told that there are "other" potential corporate donors to UofL athletics that are more than willing to step up to the plate. Yes, he does have a huge ego and I think an apology is in order. It is NOT his stadium, it is ours. We, the fans built the stadium with our hard earned money/donations and with a $15 million bond issue from the city of Louisville which we also paid off. He did not come into the picture until August of 1997 and it's was simply to buy the naming rights to the stadium - nothing else. And, by the way, Tom Jurich wasn't even an employee of the University until October of 1997. Papa John's Pizza has gotten a damn good deal for their original $10 million investment plus an additional $10 million during the original expansion to 55K. Where else could that company have spent $20 million and have gotten that kind of publicity over a 20 year period? Have you "noticed" the name on the West stands roof? Plus it ensured the local pizza market to his company. He may have cost himself a good deal of that market share. I'm just sayin' that's all.

I'll lay anyone dollars to donuts that PJ's recent temper tantrums relate to "HIS" stadium and the sponsorship or privileges. Something's morphing, and he doesn't like it.

One thing I've learned about U of L and financial support...it's what have you done for them LATELY, not 20 years ago.

I still havent eaten papa johns pizza since his childish rant.

Maybe floating a possible name change will humble the drunk and illicit an overdue apolgy.

I'm assuming they put a contract together with Papa John's to name the stadium. I don't think you can change it because someone hurt your feelings by speaking the truth.

Who said PJ spoke the truth? As a uahkay fan there is very serious doubt that you'd even know what the truth is/was. You should pay attention to Rollem Card's post above.

if i remember during construction it was expected to be name the Columbia HCA stadium wasn't it? i think that was the company name, they were basically headquatered here and i believe were going to give $25 million for the naming rights but they packed up moved to nashville i think and u of l said screw them. papa john stepped up at the last minute to provide the $10 million. a great deal but one where u of l was stuck in a corner. their primary sponsor just moved out of town. and UPS wasn't quite sure fi they were making louisvllle their primary hub. so can't fault pj for what he got. persoanlly i wish there was some rich dude, like bridgeman, or maybe a go fund me account, to front $25 million and name it the Muhammed Ali Stadium. that'd end all stadium names

I wish we could find a way to avoid all of this and it would simply become Cardinal Stadium. I get that it'll probably never happen, but would love to see it.

i agree but you'll never get someone to turn down $20 million for the naming rights

Well, with our "tax the rich" mentality, and with UL bragging 24/7 about how much money they have, I have to ask...

When is it "enough"?

If naming corporate rights are going to feel they have "management input", just say no. $20m, over 10 years, with our budget, is nothing.

Cardinal Stadium. End of story.

But it won't be. Greed will rule.

Me too. Even been to a couple of parties where they ordered Papa John's pizza. I politely left. No way I'd ever eat at anything with his name on it. I am even contemplating not going to another football game until they change the name. That's how much that man disgusts me.

Name it after Howard Schnellenberger. Without him, it never gets built and we are FCS.

Take the Long View, he was there when nobody else was.
So what? If he was there 100 years ago with a five-dollar bill, does that entitle him to some type of perpetual honor? I don't think so.

Part of his issue now is that he wants to keep the clamps on his wallet. Too bad. As the saying goes "what have you done for me lately?"...

Bottom line is a sponsor is without a doubt involved in the naming. The only companies I could foresee (loosely) would be UPS, Humana, Norton and maybe Ford. Who knows, it will all come down to the financial aspects, which at the end of the day is the one and only thing that matters on these things.
