From 3 pointers to free throws this team is shooting atrociously bad.

The question is why are they shooting so far below their career averages? Is it the offense, bad shot selection, the step up in competition, tired legs from too much cardio???

I believe it's a combination of bad shots and tired legs. The players use so much energy on defense and on offense trying to get a decent shot it just drains them physically and mentally.

I also believe we just don't have great shooters to begin with. Waterman has a funky shot and it surprises me when he does make a 3. Hadley is a bricklayer just being honest and Edwards has a long wind-up to get off a 3 point shot.

I think Hepburn is the better shooter, even over Smith, but he has to run the offense now that he's the only real PG on the team. Smith shoots some of the worst shots I've ever seen. I don't think JJ Reddick in his prime could make many of those shots.

FT shooting woes is mostly fatigue.

Another thing with this team is the brutal schedule. They really needed a cupcake or two after the Bahamas, not back to back ranked teams. Kelsey is finding out just how big of a hole the program is in and how bad luck follows the program wherever it goes.

He has to re-evaluate the strategy with the adversity he faces with the injuries and the schedule. If he can adapt and overachieve, he's the man for the job. That's what I'm hoping for but not as confident as I was just last week.

The problem is their stats say they are getting quality shots they just miss. Do they take bad shot sure but they are 6th in the nation in shot quality.

They all shot in the 35-40 percent range last year against similar competition. Waterman and even Pryor were 35-37 percent from three. They are in the low 20’s.

They get clean looks and flat miss. Good luck winning. Now that could flip but right now none of them outside Chucky believe their shot is going in.

The only identity this team has is that they will shoot a 3-point shot 50% of the time. Even though there are great 3-point shooters in the game today, it is still a low percentage shot for most teams. At a 50% attempt rate it will be feast or famine.

We have only one shot at having a winning season, albeit a long one. We're gonna have to somehow become the best 3 point shooting team this side of the Mississippi.

Yeah,I know 😬

We all knew this going into this season, and everyone can assign their own opinion on why the % is so low, and below our expectations, but in truth that is something for CPK to figure out and to fix.

We should all agree on at least this; it explains the 20+ point losses we have experienced thus far and it must improve quickly.

Does putting on extra pounds affect shooting? Could that be a factor?

For me it's his shot. It's flat and the trajectory wavers on every release. He doesn't have a consistent release.

Players who shoot like this have up and down moments where sometimes his confidence is up and he makes more, but on the other side when the confidence wanes, the shots are mostly bricks.

Waterman just doesn't have a proper shooting form in my opinion. What is he from the FT line? 2 for 9? He's not getting robbed on his misses, they're pretty much bricks.

As for Smith, it's all about timing. On his bad misses, he's shooting too fast, trying to get the shot off before it's contested. After missing so many like that, his confidence is shaken when he has time to shoot and he continues to miss.

His best shooting this season is when he makes a few early in the game, but when the Cards are trailing and having trouble scoring, most of his shots are too fast and too deep. That's not a recipe for success unless you're name is Stef Curry.

Waterman actually impressed me more these last two games with his inside play and rebounding. I think he needs to take less perimeter shots going forward, especially now Pryor is out for the season.

Yep,when you can't stop anybody you have to figure out how to out score them.

Sound familiar? I think we've had issues like this in football in the past.

Quite the quandary.

All valid and good points. I guess what I'm getting at is Waterman played in the Big 12 last season and shot 5 threes a game at 37%.

His reasons for shooting so much worse shouldn't be level of competition or shooting too many more 3s than last year. I'm just trying to understand why he, and some others, are shooting so far below their averages last season.

Spot on about his inside play being better and we need it desperately. Also yes definitely Reyne is rushing many of his 3s.

A whole lot less pressure at BYU last season. He's pressing like everyone else and that's not conducive for good shooting, especially when you don't have a consistent release.

Waterman's best shooting game was the IU game where everyone's confidence was high. He likely had more confidence last season at BYU.

I didn’t feel like we got quality shots last night, and if we did we rushed them anyway. CPK is going to have his guys popping the long balls for as long as he is here. As usual it all comes down to recruiting. This year is frankly just going to be a long year. We’ll win more than eight games, but if we want to get back to elite, we’re going to have to get a hell of a lot better talent coming in the door. Honestly I feel like Chucky is the only guy on the roster that could be part of a final four caliber squad. Khani Rooths could be down the road, but he needs a lot of development.
